The SAF must take steps to prevent future occurences. It may not be wise to issue live rounds for guard duty in peace time except for sensitive installations where regulars should be deployed instead. In my opinion, young NS servicemen may not be mature enough to handle live ammunition in peacetime. Perhaps they can be issued with taser guns instead.
this is a one off, isolated case, we cannot to emasculate the SAF anymore .... it's rapidly becoming a boys scout troop .... if every time some incident happens, and the brass trip over their knickers trying to out-do each other in new anal measures, then soon it will be ! .... -
once in a while a few years there will be cases as such.
remember the incident in the 80's that this person with girl friends problems and took out a rifle and held girl friends hostage in Ang Mo Kio. Ave 2. or upper thomson road.

IMHO...she's taking this opportunity to become "famous" of sorts. Its crazy man...what's this world coming to.See the guy's future flushed away into the longkang and she can still feel pretty smug about it. I guess she must be thinking, "I told ya...dun screw with me". Correct me if I'm wrong...but technically he is/was still under the official EMPLOYMENT of the SAF when he left the camp. Because he's still listed as a NSF, as such IMHO he should still be classed as a employee of the SAF.

Wrong. He was not on or in the course of duty or employment once he left the camp - because his duty/employment does not allow/require him to take the rifle home or to orchard road without authorisation.

Not issuing those on guard duty w/ammo is like simply sweeping the matter under the carpet. I had a little read on her old blog before it was taken down. Seems like they are always quarrelling every few days, but after a few hours of the quarrel, the guy will humour the girl, and all will be ok again. I feel that if you are unable to stand what the person is doing and is making you unhappy, ending it early rather than late is a good choice. But from the old blog, they were together for like 2 years or more, so for her now to speak such a thing against her ex bf, it like she is taking this chance to back stab him. -

Failed relationship may have led soldier to go AWOL with rifle

ARMY Corporal Dave Teo Ming, 20, was last seen at the Mandai Hill Camp on Sunday in his camouflage army fatigues.
Twenty hours later, he was arrested in a third-floor toilet in the Orchard Cineleisure mall, dressed in a black suit and tie.
With him were the missing assault rifle and live ammunition taken from the camp where he had been on guard duty.
The lean-built full-time national serviceman, one month from completing his NS stint, triggered an islandwide manhunt after he went absent without official leave (AWOL) with the loaded SAR-21 rifle.
No further information was released yesterday by the police or Defence Ministry, but details of his life have emerged that suggest his actions could be linked to a failed relationship.
His former girlfriend, Miss Crystal Liew, 18, got a phone call from the police at about 7am on Monday, while she was at a Pasir Ris chalet with her friends. They wanted to know whether she knew where he was.
'I was clueless as I had not seen nor spoken to him for about two weeks,' said Miss Liew, who had broken off with him five months ago.
She was told to stay put and a car was sent over to get her.
According to Miss Liew, she was introduced to Cpl Teo by friends in 2003, some time after he had dropped out of Secondary 3.
They dated for more than three years, spending time in his home, playing computer games, eating meals cooked by his grandmother and shopping.
Miss Liew said: 'He was very sweet and generous as he would buy me clothes, souvenirs and a watch even when he wasn't earning much with his army pay.'
But he was also very possessive, she said. After he enlisted in 2005, she alleged that he would call her up to five times and send about 10 messages every day, so he could keep tabs on her whereabouts.
And he disapproved of her going out with her own friends.
She said: 'I was like a prisoner when he stopped me from meeting other people and scolded me for smiling at people I speak to, accusing me of flirting.'
Miss Liew broke up with Cpl Teo in March and has been seeing someone else since.

Her father told The Straits Times he had called the police for help, but did not lodge a police report.
Cpl Teo kept away after that and last month, Miss Liew saw him for the last time, at his birthday party.
Among the last few people to talk to Cpl Teo was his friend of 16 years, administrative executive Bocky Tan, who described him as being 'emotional yet happy-go-lucky'.
Cpl Teo called him at about 10pm, just before he went AWOL, and asked if he could stay over that night as he had quarrelled with his family.
Mr Tan turned him down. 'Normally, he would talk to me first and get my advice, but this time he never said a word.'
The next he heard of him was his arrest.
It is believed that Cpl Teo lives with his grandparents, a cousin and an uncle.
His relatives declined to be interviewed yesterday when approached at the family's three-room flat in New Upper Changi Road, except to say they last saw him on Friday.

Ok so what the they are bf & gf relationship last time. For whatever reasons ... they broke off . As mention he is a nut case that call & SMS to control her movement. You got this nutcase who did not want to let her go ... go to the house of the GF to kick a fuss a few times, and threaten to kill the whole family ...!!!
Then out of the blue - one night police when you happy at chalet then police all you - that your ex have a gun maybe out looking to shoot you and family ....
If you are the ex-girl friend ? what you want her to say !!! I would say tell the guy to die !!!
As for limelight - as the ex-girl friend - why not isn't it the best time to tell the whole world what an horror this guy is - after he come to house to make trouble and threaten to kill whole family .... you put yourself in her shoe ... it would be the best time to tell the whole bloody world , she got nothing or want to have nothing to do with a nut case like him. -

Agree. I read through her old blog too. He was arrested on Monday in a third-floor toilet in the Orchard Cineleisure mall, dressed in a black suit and tie.

He will be in remand for another week pending further investigation.

Another man, Ong Boon Jun, 21, was also charged. He is accused of knowing that Teo was carrying the rifle when they were at a hotel in Geylang.

apparently he was with a friend and there is reasonable presumption that the person knows Dave Teo is in possession of a SAR 21.

i just think cpl teo's ex gf just wanted to be famous as some forumers have said. typical people will protect the rights of the detained (cpl teo) but she decided to spill the beans so early. trying to reveal so much will mean she wants everyone to knw she is a 'victim'.
however on cpl teo's side, we also know he has commited grave offences liable to army and civilian law. could be because he treated her badly which is why she wanted to spill the beans and cause more damage? -
