  If no formal appointment, then usually arrowed as Group IC or 2IC.

  in the past, 3SGs holds important appointments, like Platoon Sergeants. back then section commanders are CPLs.
  
  3SGs are also colors escorts for major parades. nowadays it's usually 2SG.
