so do these people get their pension all at once or yearly or what?

Retire at 45 for officers & 55 for WOs.
No more traditional pensions like before. Instead, they'll mainly build their own retirement fund through the years, under the SAVER & Premium schemes respectively. (The police have their own INVEST scheme, I believe.)

To reach age 45, an officer will likely be been on his third serving contract with the SAF.
For the "condemned", they would've long left earlier. The benchmarks for non-highfliers will be something like making MAJ by age 29-30, or LTC at 36-37. If you haven't attain the appropriate rank, or don't see yourself achieving it, then no point reupping, lah. Don't forget the military works on a pyramid hierarchy, with the scholars on the faster-promotion track.[/quote] -
there again, only if you can excel in ur academics, then consider signing on as officer. you'll move up ranks faster and have more pension at the end of the day.
if not, b a specialist.
but i'd rather u not to sign on; since all u want is money!
