Commandos put security to the test
IN 1974, Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Clarence Tan was one of the eight 'guarantors' handed over to terrorists, who had hijacked a ferry called Laju. The terrorists were escaping from the Shell oil refinery after exploded a few bombs.
The eight guarantors, who took the place of the released hostages, accompanied the four terrorists in their flight to safety overseas. The book does not mention when the eight returned here.
After the incident, security planners immediately set about testing the security of vital installations.
Lt-Col (Ret'd) Tan said a team of commandos was directed to infiltrate key installations to show that - even with soldiers on guard there - they were not impenetrable.
'We managed to break into every single one. We went into all the power stations. St James Power Station, Caltex refinery, Mobil, even our Chartered Industries.'
Security at all installations was tightened after this exercise by the commandos.
