2. what the hell is a military observer? (and do they fight? like patrol around the streets or something like that..)

* Monitor the various agreements on cease-fires, withdrawals and demilitarization.
* Patrol both sides of the conflict, including the areas along the confrontation lines.
* Help resolve local difficulties (social, economic, etc.) by liaison with all sides of the conflict.
* Investigate allegations of aggression or cease-fire violations. -

If you need to ask in this forum, high chance is that you don't qualify.
By right, can be any NSF/NSman/regular officer, but subject to SAF selection. You cannot sign up directly with UN.
From history, they usually only consider MAJ, LTC and above, whom they deem mature enough to conduct the task.
Observers do not go there and see see only....their duty is to ensure that a conflict area is observing a ceasefire or a peace agreement.
Means two sides already agree to some peace...observers go in representing UN , to make sure both sides really follow.
Observers may be lightly armed, but not actively engaging in a combat role, but for defensive purpose.
The observer need to be mature enough, and of high enough rank to command respect and be able to make decisions, assessments of whether either side is breaking the peace agreement.
Some of the our past SAF observers have really been heroes, such as a Commando Colonel (MAJ then), whom when evacuated under enemy fire, stayed on to evacuate other foreign UN personnel, although he could just walk away....and many others. -
Actually, civilians can work for the UN's DPKO. There are many openings there for career UN staff. But if you have to ask here.. chances are that you're not one of those in the eligible pool.
Lastly, for UN Mil Observers, these are strictly selected from contributing host nations. -

I can't remember. Even if I can, it might be classified.
Some of the missions they go might be abit sensitive, so SAF selectively makes them known in public.
Anyway, the peace observers selected are usually quite high-rank people, with understanding of political backgrounds and mature enough to command respect....it won't be any of us here anytime soon. -
