hey need some advice.
im a JC2 student taking my A levels and have been posted to commandos supposed to go in on jan 11. but problem is i wanna be a pilot cos thats where my interest lies. so i've been asking around bout what best to do next and most ppl are telling me to sign up before i go in for my bmt.
i was thinking of two possibilities. firstly sign up for air force and see what goes next, or stay in commando and come out then either apply for air force, or commercial when im 25 cos i hear ppl saying lots of SIA pilots are ex-commandos. but wouldnt this wate alot of my time if i do get into air force in the end.
so... was thinking, what should i do next and would my being in commando affect chances of getting into air force. By the way my eyesight about 250-300. abit high? thought the limit was 500.
do give me your 2 cents worth ya. thx -
you'd still have to do your BMT somewhere right ? ...
after BMT shortlisted chaps will be grabbed by the airforce ... if you CMI then you'll be posted back for your BCT with another coy ... -
yea i'd still have to do my CDO bmt i guess. but i have to be an officer first? im actually abit confused about all these ocs and pilot stuff

Not an expert on this subject but if you really keen on signing on then i would say you might as well just sign on air force straight. If you are just considering pilot, maybe you can just give commandoes a try, its not everyone that can get in and there might be something there that might attact you.Originally posted by justinwie89:hey need some advice.

Normally people after BMT don't want sign on liao cause they know how fucked up the whole organisation is, want sign on better sign on early :p
Fighter pilot requirement is 500 ah? i thought 300 but forgot liao cause last time i heard of pilot is during BMT time when air force go tekong ask ppl sign on. -
His is direct intake so there will unlikely be any chance of posting out after BMT since its normally 2 years stuck there. yea i wanna be a pilot but fighter pilot takes priority. is it a requirement to clear OCS in CDO before they accept me? cos ppl tell me OCS in CDO freaking hard to get in. so its advisable to sign up before BMT?

the CDO intake isn't very large i think and only the top few might be chosen for OCS. probrably end up in a multi-crew environment. -
fighter boy or not, its largely based on your flying ability and also your character and personality. fighter boys tend to be type A personality, but then, there are a small handful i have seen otherwise.
never heard that myopic degree plays a part in the aircraft type you fly. pilot trainees are all send for PRK surgery, which works the same as LASIK.
it does not matter whether they post you commandos or tekong BMT. if you are interested to be a pilot, i would recommend you to just apply directly to RSAF as a pilot.
if you clear the COMPASS test, interview and medical, they will automatically send you for air grading and the rest will be history.
pursue your interest first, don't let the talk about how screwed up SAF can get so on and so fro. but do bear in mind its a 12 year bond.

I believe you will still be able to get a job with them even if not pilot if you choose to sign on. yup its pilot or nothing.
If you don't make it, you go back to CDO.
If you make it...they send you air-grading, if air-grading dun make it, they either send you back to CDO, or they send you to SISPEC and become Infantry/Guards Specialist.
In rare case...they may ask you for air-grading again after sending you back to SISPEC. I had a friend who got that.... -

you apply for pilot, you will go for the selection. of course SAF would want more regular, and they will open other options to you to consider.
i have seen a couple of cases where they offer WSO(Fighter) to some of those who failed to clear their air grading.
other than that. you still have WSO (C3), WSO(Navigator), WSO (ADA), WSO (UAV), AEO, AMO etc.
but its your decision. they will not stream you into something for a career without your approval. -

i thought it was only a small controlled group that was allowed so that they can monitor the long time side effects if any before allowing people to do this kinda of operation n fly for airforce.
flying ability plays a part of course. but u don't want a half blind pilot flying a fighter jet and amidst the manouvring, the glasses get slight dislodged in the helmet n u got to adjust it because you can't.
n u're not allowed to wear contacts to fly. -

nope. understand its all the myopic pilot trainees will be send for this PRK. and though its similar to LASIK, its not LASIK.
glasses a not, all the pilots, be it a rotary wing, fighter wing or transport wing, will still wear helmet, so it does not just limit you to no fighter. -
ok. u may be right.
i haven't encountered too many fighter guys with glasses as yet.
but since the number of myopic ppl in sg has gone up, i guess u got to let ppl get better eyesight else u have a shortage of pilots to train.
understand that in fighters u dun really have time for all this kinda glasses adjusting or squinting of yr eyes to try and make out what u're looking at cos things just happen fast. too fast.. maybe in a dual cockpit u can ask ppl to take control while u adjust....
but in a single cockpit. if ur hands are off the stick, who's flying the jet?

I don't serve the commandoes nor even bother what they do since combat side is not my interest and so what if i'm wrong? I'm not a know all and don't expect everyone who serve to know everyone.. Why dont you just go CMPB and ask from the mindef career officers there?????
think before u sign, cos its a 12yr contract, with uni education in between not counted, need "Cat XX" status before u can go for uni, etc........
and if you're not selected as a fighter pilot, stuck as transport pilot..... how??? regret for 12 years???
whatever it is, do things for the right reason and do it with passion, and dont look back, regret never try...................
p.s. sign on/or not, you must still serve BMT in CDO...... cos u kenna mono-intake. enjoy the new pasir ris chalet..... -

hey player1419 how u know im in canoeing?
anyway, my take is to just go and sign up for the pilot thing. then sit for the compass test and what not. you can then decide from then on if you really want to sign on since you can get a better sense of how things are. most prolly you would have finished your bmt by then.
then again, you wont have much to worry cos most prob they would have made the decision for you.
anyway, go stardee your mcq la.
