i thought it was only a small controlled group that was allowed so that they can monitor the long time side effects if any before allowing people to do this kinda of operation n fly for airforce.
flying ability plays a part of course. but u don't want a half blind pilot flying a fighter jet and amidst the manouvring, the glasses get slight dislodged in the helmet n u got to adjust it because you can't.
n u're not allowed to wear contacts to fly.
on top of compass test, interview, medical checkup, myopic pilot trainees have 1 additional eye checkup at NUH.
if u fail this eye checkup (check whether ur eyes r suitable for PRK), u can say bye bye to the air force even if u passed the remaining checkups n test n interview. -
I cant even pass the COMPASS test. lol.. u can pass the COMPASS test first then say la. Go apply lor. no harm unless you sign their contract.
Compass test is a 5hrs computerised test. If u pass, u proceed to interview.
Bare in mind. 12 yrs bond in RSAF. Gdbye to your 20s.
You cant choose which type of pilot to be BUT in COMPASS, they will ask you to rate from fighter to heli.
If you got selected, they will send you for Lasik or smt. After BMT, they will take you out and send u OCS. All pilots must grad from OCS. Then you will go Air Force Sch and further training at Aussie,US .. blah blah..
Remember, if you sign on and u got injured in the process.. tts it for life.. 12 yrs you might downgrad to some RSAF vocation.. -
yea i dont mind the bond actually. as long as i get to fly. lol. whats all this about farmer and scholar pilot. dont they give that LSA thing to pilots who have good academic results? does that still make u a farmer.
i noticed in the online sign up page they asked bout ur cca records. are they more interested in brains or brawn. whats the physical training for being a pilot like? just abit curious. -
You should really hop down to manpower base at depot road.....
Capt Aaron Mak, the recruitment officer is a really nice chap and his main job is to round up all suitable pilot wannabes.
Anyway, if your interest is flying, you should accept whatever plane you are assigned. Being a transport pilot, flying a C130 or F50 is already a dream come true. Not everyone can handle the g-force of an F16.
It is all in your destiny. If you are meant to fly, you will. -

2) go to air force sch to prepare for airgrading
3) go to tamworth for airgrading
4) go ocs
5) go pearce for bwc
n btw... ur preference for rotary, transport or fighter is erm... more like they choose u... not u choose them. LoL!

I gather you are in the 17-18 year old range. Usually guys of that age group have got some pretty colourful ideas about being a fighter-pilot, with the A-level cohort particularly bent on being an officer for some strange reasons. Anyhow, let's take a closer look at these choices.
First let's talk about being an officer. I do not know what you guys of the current generation are thinking of, but back then, you will hear guys on the basketball court bouncing their balls (basketball) while talking about wanting to shave their heads in preparation for enlistment..........
Please, don't do that. That act says a lot about the fragile nature of their minds. Go ahead, dye your hair if you want to. When its time to shave it off, it will happen, no need to slowly wean yourself off all that crowning glory.
The next topic will be OCS. They somehow think that having straight A's in A-levels is not good enough, they must headbutt their way into OCS by hook or by crook, or else their egos will take a beating. DO you know what being an officer means? It's not a permanent branding under your foot or something like that. It's just a role you need to play should you be selected for that period of time as an NSF, a small number of them do sign on and become captains eventually, but to carry on until that age of 45, that is really rare, and anything beyond that age, your chances of even having a contract offered to you is as good as being selected after several rounds of parading yourself on TV for star search. And this occurs in the Navy, Army and airforce. Talk about career decisions, unless you are born with blood on your palm like Genghis khan, I'd say its a high stakes gamble. After you finish your term as an officer during NSF.....what then? DOes it help in your career in the civilian world? Yes it does, to a certain extent depending on the nature of your choice of work, but don't look at it as a must. And if you do get your contract, by which time it means you may be ejected out at the age of 45, with no other work experience, balding, kids to feed, wife to please.......you wanna know what is happening to my friend who is a captain?
Airforce fighterpilots......you know, the job's not all about flying, its about projects, projects, and more projects, lots of office politicking, none of that TOP GUN "oh I'm so tom cruise I'm going to pull a few G's and date my instructor" kind of stuff. Not even close. And if you do get close, be sure you clean up after being air-sick. See the exodus of flighter pilots to the airlines for a good measure of how much these guys actually love the job.
I can go on and o, but my fingers are tired, and I need to catch a show. What you really need to do is speak to the people who are actually doing what you are doing, go for the older guys, and ask them what its really all about. If you need, I can intorduce a couple of them to you. WHo knows, you may actually have what it takes, and we all know what good connections mean.

My humble advice is to just pop down CMPB and ask.
The selection tests and interviews are so stringent. What's more, acceptance into the course does not guarantee one will be a pilot eventually. Chop rate is so high....somtimes as high as 60-70% per phase.
Getting down to this business before one talks about what planes he should fly....that would be more sensible. -
Given this opportunity, I will complete Commandos training first. To be a pilot, you have a long career ahead, so it does not hurt to lose a few months in Commando training.
Learn how to parachute safely to the ground.
When you become a pilot, you will be trained how to pull the ejection seat, and learn how to land, but never get to do an actual jump.
So, with jump experience, you will be ahead of your pilot colleagues, who will never know what it will be like if they ever bail out from the aircraft. -

after ur bmt, u cross over to airforce.
give&take 1 or 2 months waiting period til end of airgrading.
if u pass airgrading, u're up for the next available tri-service term & service term in ocs. so give about 1 month waiting time + 3 mths in ocs.
thereafter u're posted back to airforce school, waiting period + time for ground school for s211 before u post over to pearce for your bwc is about 6-9mths.
basic wing course is 10-11mths.
fixed wing is about 10months as well.
rotory & transport courses on average about 6 to 7 months.
looking at which, by the time u finish and are successful, u'd be past your NS liability. bear in mind that 1 day in airforce as a pilot trainee = 1 day of NS liability. other vocations do not have such a favourable ratio.
looking on the bad side, even if u fail ur basic wing course, u would have finished at least 1.5 yrs of your NS liabilty.
left another 6 more months, u cant be expected to do much for ur posting anyway.
its a good deal, just try it. doesn't matter if u fail. u still have to do ur NS anyway. -

when u become a pilot, u at least have to take the Air-Borne Badge/Course too..that's when you're on-par with those Commandos already..
Moreover...Commandos train people to think that they are "Super-Man" and are well versed in almost everything..
If you really want to be a pilot, you have better express ur interest in pilot now online, and let them know that you're in Mono In-take, thus they can make the necessary arrangements.
The recruitment talk which i heard from my Warrant Officers are SDU & SOF talks since your fitness level is considered very fit.
That's just what I know.
You can ask your seniors if you want to..

for the down/dirty no holds barred answers. u gotta ask someone in the force to give u an honest view.
anyway. airforce pilots will fly until they retire/ or medically grounded.
but the amount u fly varies at certain stages of your career.
example, when u're in the operational squadrons. u fly alot.
then when u're doing your staff tour; u fly less, but u still fly to maintain proficiency.
and throughout your career, u'll be having tours in the squadron for a few yrs, then to a staff job, then maybe back to the squadron n stuff.
u're never really stagnant.
n u'll prob keep flying til u cant fly anymore. so not to worry.
its just a matter of how much u fly.
as for projects n stuff and all. every job has it. just that in addition to flying, sometimes u have other things to do as well, but its part n parcel of the job.
i.e; if ur groundwork has something to do with flying or operational stuff, who else better to do the paperwork for it than a pilot who knows the stuff well.
just like in the army or wadever organisation, u'll need ppl to do the planning and organisation stuff higher up in the HQ, and the workers in the active units carrying out the plans.
juz a matter of career progression. if i'm not wrong, even other airforces are also having this sorta thing where pilots not only fly but have other jobs as well.. not just ours. -

but wif regards to the jump experience, it's negligible.
wif or without jump experience, be assured that rsaf trains u up for this.

if is parachuting, pilots dun do parachutings.

to TS, it all boils down to ur interest.
however, if ur interest in commandos is tantamount to being a pilot wif the rsaf, i would recommend u to go for pilot.
why? cos there r many stringent tests for u b4 u can even be accepted as a pilot trainee n many pple fail these tests so they dun even make it to air force school.
go try for it!
commandos, on the other hand, doesnt have such a high failing rate as pilot.
but the training is physically demanding n mentally exhausting.
let's take a look at ur path, assuming u got accepted as a pilot trainee after finishing commandos bmt.
it will be quite unlikely u will be posted back to commandos if u failed ur airgrading or bwc as commandos r mono-intakes.
if u r considering pilot, tink long term.
it will be ur life career, not a 2yr stint.
tink carefully, those glamourous posters wif those pilots in F-16 r juz a facade of wat pilot does. there r a lot more to come, u dun juz fly the plane happily in the sky.
lots of pple want to be a pilot b4 enlisting, once they got in n training starts, everybody wants out.

pilot do not have to take airborne badge.. and Commando's airborne badge and normal peeps airborne badge is different. Commando does combat jump, normal peeps dun thus Commandos have the red backing. they are NOT on par. and the only reason why u see so many pilot has airborne badge is because that is the easiest confidence badge to attain and they need at least one confidence badge to promote.
