Channel NewsAsia - Sunday, December 16
SINGAPORE : 478 Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) officers were commissioned at the SAFTI Military Institute on Saturday.
And for the first time in the history of the Officer Cadet School, a New Zealander was also commissioned.
Second Lieutenant Samuel Verden Miller received the Silver Bayonet award for his outstanding performance and the Best in Physical Training award.
He said it took him a while to adapt to SingaporeÂ’s pace of life, language and food but feels he gained more than his peers by coming to Singapore for the training.
He spent 38 weeks at the School, where he and fellow Singaporean cadets were put through demanding and realistic training aimed at developing their combat, planning and leadership skills.
Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Tarmugi presided at the commissioning ceremony.
Also present was New Zealand’s Chief of Army, Major—General Lou Gardiner.
Upon graduation, the newly—commissioned SAF officers will assume operational, instructional or staff appointments in the Armed Forces. — CNA/ch
