Well, I decided to open this as a reference for old SAF items like old collar badges, formation patches and uniform items. Hope it's helpful. Feel free to add on.
COLLAR BADGES
:Mostly the same as today's collar badges but MP badge is just the word 'MP'. Airforce and Navy also have, Navy is anchor, Airforce is plane, refer to site below:
http://timesofmylife.wordpress.com/2007/05/21/bmt-to-rod/
There is one with a grenade, which I believe belongs to ARTY, and the Medic badge was a pole with 2 snakes.
BTW collar badges should have been worn on both collars.
NAME BADGES
:Still referring to site above. There are sidebars on the badge denoting what language the soldier is capable of speaking in.
Green: English
Orange: Mandarin
Malay and Tamil I can't remember. Someone told me before.
SHOULDER TITLES
:The word SINGAPURA in a curved fashion. Worn on the strap where you put your epaulette.
FORMATION PATCH
:Worn where you put it today, but on both arms.
1 PDF: PDF Lion on blue background
ARMOUR: Fist and bayonets in saltire on red background.
ARTY: 2 yellow cannons in saltire on red circle with blue background.
SCE: A yellow symbol that looks like hourglass (Displays tower, bomb and something else) on a brown background.
SAFTI: Yellow Sword and Torch on red background.
Signals: 3 vertical stripes of red-blue-red. A stylised S is in the middle of the blue stripe. (Like today's logo. Reminds you of the Schutzstaffel runes)
Navy: Swordfish on light blue background
SADC? Eagle with red background
There was also the 3DIV Patch but I can't describe it in colour. Just the tiger in the middle.
BRASSARD
MPs have their brassard, but it is black lettering on red, not the reverse as is today.
HELMET
MP Helmet has the words MP in front and a red stripe going around its circumference.
BELT
The pistol belt was used. White for MPs and i think brown was for everybody else. Correct me if i'm wrong.
UNIFORM
Some pics from NHB suggest that our current MP No.3 was used by SAF Band but without boots(just shoes) and a black belt.
It is also common knowledge that the early RSAF no. 3 was more blue than it is today. The NCC(Air) still uses the old No.3
Well, that's all I can think of.
On a side note, I'm trying to acquire such old insignia. Do they sell such stuff at Beach Road? I once saw the shoulder titles there.
Nice! Nothing to contribute sorry cuz I'm still a young bird. But I guess Beach Road would be the best place for such things-- unless you wanna break into the Army Museum of Singapore :P. I've seen some stuff on Ebay as well-- sometimes even collectors from other countries want to sell off their collection and you can find some good stuff.
