Hi people. officer career in the SAF only until max of 45 yrs old rite. will the next job u take up after the transition programme offer the same pay or drop significantly?
not really true.if u reach a certain rank before you retire,u can stay up to 60 yrs of age in the army otherwise there would nt be enough or any senior officers or policy makers of that age.
me no heard of 60 yrs old regular b4...for officers the max age they can stay till is 45 yrs old and specialist/warrant officers can stay till 55..

there is a difference for farmer officer and scholar officer... u noe...
farmer officer contract finish go outside find job urself, while
scholar officer is safe to transit to non-uniformed public Civil Service.
At the end of the day,all jobs in the private sector especially management level require RELEVANT working experience for the job that you are applying for.
Being a LTC does not mean that one can expect to be a partner straight away at a Big 4 firm even though your army rank technically does put you at the same level of management as one.
Vice versa, above said partner(eg.NSman CPL) at the Big 4 firm cannot expect to be commisioned as a LTC/COL straight away should he decide to quit his accounting job and join the force just because of his former position.
If you are a scholar, then it's another story.....
scholar means SAFOS scholar? wad about SMS and SAS scholars? do they enjoy the same privileges?
and one more thing-
after being stucked in the armed forces for 20 over yrs, n therefore having no relevant prior working experience, don u tink companies out there wun even consider hiring u? even if they do, u'll have a hard life adapting to eveyting wun u?
the job transition will become a total nightmare.

yep.
sgfish u're yep-ing for which part? lol
oh ppl btw can we have another job, eg. starting a new cafe if you're working as an officer in the SAF? or do u need some approval from the top?

hmm.i've heard that civil servants are not allowed to have outside interest and have to declare if any.
A simple analogy, probably, is that SAFOS is First Class Air ticket, SMS is Business Cls, while LSAs are probably Economy Cls ... the rest, pls find ur own budget airline ...
haha. next analogy =)
so will anyone of u suggest a job in the armed forces?

u can go sign on ONLY WHEN there is an economic recession...
Depends on the reason you are signing up for.
Some sign on with the sole purpose of getting some savings first but having no intention to stay on in the long run.
Others sign on as they worship the idealogy of having no greater calling than serving one's country.
I know of some who even sign on just to get a chance of entering the 3 local university because with their average results or a diploma, their chances are very slim if they applied on their own.One diploma officer applied for all 3 local uni before signing on and got rejection from all...he then signed on as officer and got an offering fo EEE degree at NTU under the LSA scheme.
At the end of the day,you will ask yourself the same questions that would have clouded your mind if you had a job in the private sector:
1)Do I really like this job?Do I really have a genuine interest?
2)Do I really know what to do or expect in this job or am I applying for it just because I have some form of degree?
3)Is the pay good? What about the bonuses?
4)Am I in this for the long run?Is it worthwhile?
5)Do I even have a chance to have a social life?Maybe that potential soul mate?(Many will deny it but let's admit it,our life is not all about work, work place colleagues are still humans with feelings.)
6)Will having this job make me look good in front of my peers and relatives?(Applicable to both sexes)
7)Can I transfer my knowledge and experience from my current job to another one should the opportunity present itself? Are they valid or relevant to the position?
In the end,you have to ask whether the job can satisfy most of your own self-interest.Even passion for a job is a form of self-interest as you are basically satisfying the need to do something that you like.
thx baiku for your opinion.
personally i've a strong interest in working in the armed forces but with my A-lvl results, the most i could get is a LSA . and this probably means dat i will not go really far in my career and that's totally nt what i seek for.
having known that yr future is sealed and nt gona go far before u take up a job is nt wad i wan.
such a dilemma. few more months to decide my future
need some suggestions people.
thx =)

There's no need to rush into things, especially if it concerns your own future.
Like what most people will tell you,go for your BMT first then see how from there. You have to do well enough to get selected for OCS too.
Get a taste of the army lifestyle as an NSF first then see if you still have the same opinion by then.
While waiting to enlist, try looking at this website to see what opportunities are available to you should you choose to go down this path.
At the same time, please do a comparison to other offerings that are available in the private sector and keep an open mind. There might be jobs outside of the SAF that will interest you too.
Talk to BOTH people who think that signing on is good and to those who think otherwise.Learn all the positives and negatives of an army career from them and make an informed choice of your own.

WUn ppl who decide to sign on as officers in the armed forces at a later time because of various reasons like after studying in poly ( 3 yrs ) lose out from those who studied in JC ( 2 yrs )??
even if it's jus 1 year, it makes a great deal of difference in a short 20-year carreer doesn't it?

if u eat rice from any jobs from civil service... then yes...
but then, if private sector, no lose out...cos
good poly results = advanced standings into U programmes. some direct entry into 2nd/3rd and even final year.

Yupyup.. True true.. Rednano got it right.. There are alot more things to take note of if regulars wanna keep their job.. You either got to do your job damn well that you shine among your peers, or you can be a F*ed-up-soldier-who-dunno-your-own-job but you have the right connections and know how to PR with key people within the top management.. That is actually the 2 secrets to how regulars get their PP2..
