cock up means cock up. If you are a really good officer, the incident wont even happen in the first place. But no doubt he is selfless.
i shudder to think how the grenade even managed to land behind them.
you're supposed to throw forward isn't it??
Accidents do happen. Tekong is well known for "special" events to happen too.
my bunk mate took someone's firing pin to get that person in trouble. but after that he realised his firing pin was missing yet the person's firing pin was found. he of course turned frantic and panic so we helped him find.
guess where we found the pin? inside his locked cupboard. he never opened his cupboard during that time and his key was hung by his neck... strange eh? welcome to Tekong.

good officer, the incident won't happen?
its not even within his control how the recruit threw.

correct. those who did NS will know... there are always elephant shooters and butter fingers in the ranks.

Pretty much means that our SFG are useless.
Then again, we were all told that the "LIVE" grenade we were throwing is only 20% charge, and contained no ball bearings. Essentially a big-bang. And dear 2LT Kok got a medal for this?
Pardon me for being cynical, but last I recalled, the PC was supposed to "throw"/ "usher" the recruit over to the OTHER side of the wall in the event that the grenade dropped inside the throwing bay.
who told u that??
if thats true, then how did i find ball bearing and took photos of them?

i remember one funny* guy when i was doing NS.
you know the strip and assemble your M16 test? 1 minute to strip the rifle, position the parts properly, get approval and then assemble back the rifle. some can do it, some really cannot do it...
our sergeant taught us many times but this recruit (i admit he's a little slow) always take more than 2 minutes. either forget firing pin or got stuck somewhere... even after CSM taught him personally, also cannot pass the test. as an officer, what can you do? in the end just pass him lor.

last time my platoon also got one like that...
till now he still cannot do it in 3min...LOL...
I was in SBMT in the old days. We saw many recruits who were really "blur". One case involved my company. One afternoon, my company was activated to go down to the 25m shooting range in the camp.
When we got there , the place was a mess ! There were blood stains and blood pools all over the place. Another company's recruit had just accidentally shot 2 of his instructors with one round. The round passed through the hand of the nearest instructor and exited and passed through the calf muscle of another instructor.
Our company was tasked to find the round. But anyway, this recruit was supposed to be one of the blur kings in the other company. he thought he had "IA" and turned around to ask his instructor for help. But his finger was still on the trigger and he pointed his rifle towards the people standing behind him !

Changed already. Now the place where they stand to throw is like a round concrete place with a wall to protect them. The part where they stand and throw is up a ledge above the ground, and beind got another concrete circle that is at ground level with the grass.
So if the grenade falls onto where they are supposed to stand and throw, they are to move back and get down from the ledge (where they are supposed to stand and throw) and prone down and do the normal protective measure drill. If the grenade land behind the concrete circle, then they remain where they are on the ledge and prone down and do the same.
So in other words, if the grenade is down, you remain up, if the grenade dropped upstairs, you go down. The command is "pit" and "bay".
