just a short introduction about myself.
just OOTed after a week in BMT and got posted to a unit 1 week later.
am currently doing OETI (Comms). my course officially starts on the 22nd Dec and ends 3 months later. subsequently will be having OJE (On Job Experience) for 2 months and afterwhich i guess that's when i'll be posted to my 'permanent' unit.
i feel like doing a part-time degree during this period of time but i'm not sure if my final posting will be a 8-5 vocation as well. need advice on this
medical status: currently a sufferer from discoid eczema and had an asthma relapse just 2 days ago

You now in Only Eat Talk and Idle, of cos you feel like signing up to do this course, that course now. What happen if after you sign, turn out you posted to chiong sua vocation. dun think you can get your $ back from the school.
U will be posted to 6AMB and most likely in 63FMD. After which, u will either be stuck in ARC or you will be attached to one of the FMPs (armor units) to help repair their comms equipment. Generally u will be attached to 1AMB workshops there.
If you remain in ARC - its stay out (8-5)
If you get attached out, its usually stay in (though your BWO may let u stay out unless its high key). Depends on your BWO lor.
Dont do anything till u get your offical posting.
thank you for the advices
grandmaster89: you mentioned armor units, does that mean either CCK or LCK?
Gloater: ya lor i also scared like this
tarutaru: from the advices here, i guess i'll have to go with this.
Cdo & Pilot: i'm from cougar.

I'll add one more point.
Don't sign up for any course until you have been posted, and also have found out your work commitments + duties + alert manning. Usually, it's safer to sign on for a course after you have settled into your unit, and have a schedule worked out.
In that case, it will be easier to talk to your CSM or superior about this, most of them are very supportive for a study plan.
OT: Interesting, comms is under 6AMB now.. hmm. grandmaster89, when did this happen?

Could be Kranji, Gedong, Keat Hong etc. Basically any workshop (B veh not too sure) that requires a comms tech. Im in 1AMB and there is always 1 comms tech attached to our platoon.

Incidentally, the comms tech who is attached to my workshop is also gg for night studies haha! But he is a regular who will be ORDing in OCT 09. I believe 6AMB deals with light arms and comms. The comms tech spec in my platoon comes from 63FMD.
grandmaster just a question for you. any idea when i'll be doing my recourse for BMT?
Originally posted by skythewood:before your ORD

You are serving a National Service. Even if your vocation is 8-5, you are still require to report back to camp as and when require. MINDEF will not give any special grant to you for studies despite all reasons.

If you remain Pes A/B then yes you will go to an enhanced batch. After which you will most likely be posted to a combat vocation. When you will do your recourse is up to you. You must first pass your BMT Recourse FFI. You will fail it if you are still seeing a specialist. I highly recommend you to downpes to Pes C so that you can remain in the AMBs while attending a much easier Pes C recourse batch (no confinement week, no recruit haircut etc).
In my unit (1AMB), quite a number of people are doing night studies. You will need to get your DC's (engineering equivalent of combat's OC) approval first. Try it once you get posted to a FMD.

Wrong. It is up to your immediate superior to determine if you can go off earlier for classes.
In the case of night classes, you can go, but should you have duty, duty comes first.

I think it is only of privilege that any servicemen are granted for night classes/courses and any other activities by their superior. It is mandatory to serve. The thread starter feels like taking up PT degree course and assume that if his posting is 8-5 vocation, it will enhance his chances.

9/10 times, you will be allowed to go for your night classes/driving class. And generally, you might even be excused from overtime etc. It depends on your superior.
