SINGAPORE: It is ever more critical for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to have leaders of the highest quality. Hence, it must continue to attract the best young talent who can think ahead and implement bold plans to bring the SAF to the next level.
Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said this when he presented this year's SAF Overseas Scholarships to six young men on Tuesday.
Mr Teo, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said: "SAF scholars are challenged with a fast-paced career with the SAF. They will be sent to premier civilian as well as military institutions of education to mature and sharpen their minds. Success is not assured. Hard work, dedication and commitment are required. But the satisfaction are many.
"Confidence in the SAF rests on it having the best leadership, so that the SAF will be well-led, well-trained, equipped with modern and superior equipment, ready to respond to all contingencies.
"Every able-bodied Singaporean male is enlisted for National Service. Ultimately, should the SAF ever be called to battle, Singaporeans want to know that the commanders leading our servicemen are the most capable and committed, and will lead our men to victory in battle. There are no second chances."
Mr Teo said previous SAF scholars have helped build up the organisation and new challenges await a new generation of leaders.
He said: "In an ever more interconnected world, the spectrum of threats we face will be wider and even more complex, going beyond the conventional threats to include terrorism, piracy, natural disasters, pandemics and others that we have not yet foreseen.
"Instability in one part of the world has far-reaching consequences in other regions. Technology for ever more deadly weapons will become available to both state and non-state actors.
"These could threaten us from beyond the horizon, or assist a lone suicide bomber to evade detection. The SAF leadership of the future must be ready to face this wider and more complex spectrum of threats."
When the SAF scholars return from their studies, heavy responsibilities await them.
SAF Overseas Scholarship recipient Stanley Lim Kah Liang said: "Health is very important in the army and we don't want any non-operational incidents. So I will try and improve on the health standards and measures already in place, so that we ensure that our men train hard and train safe."
Chua Sheng Ho, another SAF Overseas Scholarship recipient, said: "Training my men well, training them to be leaders themselves, and train them to be more flexible in their decision-making process so they can be more able to make good decisions when the situation calls for it."
Mr Teo said SAF scholars not only serve in the Ministry of Defence and the SAF, they are also seconded to other ministries and government agencies. Six of them have so far entered politics and become ministers.
But for Nicholas Tay Weizhe, an SAF Overseas Scholarship recipient this year, he said: "For me, I don't think politics is on the top of my mind at this point of time. I am not going to rule it out, of course. For me, I am more attracted to the civil service."
The SAF Overseas Scholarships have been awarded to 269 servicemen since its inception in 1971.

For the military service, shouldn't leadership qualities or passion to serve be of more paramount importance rather than "talent" ?

Precisely.
A "talented" soldier may not be the best leader / soldier.
Can all classroom "talent" be battlefield "talent" too? I personally dun wanna see them in action because . . . . .
increase pay then say...
if u work under a high ranking
high flyer officer..
From 8-5 . u dun really see them in office
and funnie thing is that u always
get to see one golf set in the car..
Why hor?
must be one of the "talents" who said that there won't be any war in the near future that is why RSAF start to commercialise

Leadership qualities and passion to serve are included as part of the package during selection already, and are key pillars in selection of all PSC scholars, not just SAFOS. How come got Singaporean dunno common knowledge and whats happening around them? So funny

You're just jealous because you have succeeded nowhere in life- in neither school, life nor the battlefield. hahahaah
And what is 'highing and highing'?! no wonder cannot succeed. SAFOS is nothing new, the pillar of PSC after the PS, its been happening since 1971, get with the programme, although it's probably due to them that the general education level of the farmers are raised 'highing and highing', making it hard for you to join. Someone who doesn't know what's gung-ho, how that is even possible and obviously didn't even get into OCS.and you have the cheek to produce such comments on top PSC scholars...hahahaha so funny. hahah

Why must i be jealous? Whats with your reply? Im only asking a question "Can all classroom "talent" be battlefield "talent" too?" Can u spot the question mark? i bet u can now. Someone who doesn't know what's gung-ho, how that is even possible and obviously didn't even get into OCS? since when who screamed "I WANT TO GET IN OCS!"?
Intresting
Make no mistakes, SAFOS are a special breed of Singaporeans, the cream of the crop. Many aspires to it, but each year, only a few make that grade.
Their life history is critically studied, from Primary School to Uni, their family background, relatives, friends, their extra-cirrular activities right down to what they do on weekends.
Not only are they throughly studied, they also have to be physically fit and able to take trememdous pressure. Only then are they vetted and selected, to lead our society, initially in the military, then the civil service, a dedicated and devoted service to our nation.
Not many would accept or appreciate the sacrifices they make and the responsibilities they have to undertake. They are indeed a special breed of citizens, matured and intelligent, groomed to serve and uplift lives.
Having said that, there are others too, whom while may not have their qualifications, do still have the calibre to serve our country. Know always that the bullet fired in a war knows no name and makes no distinction between a pauper and a king.
Every citizen plays a part, and each should take pride in such fact, because without you, there will be no me. We all, from the roadsweeper to the PM, stand together as one nation, are and will always be equal. The only difference lies with our responsibilities. The broader our shoulders or mind, the better we will be able to carry our fellow citizens to a brighter future.
We all are one.

So you're using the no-question mark to say that u were just 'innocently' making a 'query'? haha
Did I say you want to go to OCS? I said you COULD NOT MAKE IT (CMI) to OCS. Do you have to want to go to Harvard, or go to the moon, or want to be sucessful, be a millinaire, in order for me to know that you will never make it to Harvard or the moon or ever be successful? I never wanted to be queen of Monaco too because..big surprise! Gasp I knew I could never be.
All I made was one simple clear point = it's such a joke that there can be such super CMI and thick skinned people, didn't get anywhere talking about people who went through it all and topped delta and top of PSC and everything. Such a joke you know, don't go out and tell too many people, sure invite rotten egg buffets hurled on your face.

Of cos we are all one. Prince or Pauper. All suffer the equalizer that doesn't recognise merit known as mortality, There's nothing wrong with being at any position in the pecking order anywhere. It only becomes a joke when this thing called shame, is lacking! In Hokkien its called BHB.

All the rest are men here, everyone knows full well what happened lah. If you had the balls (of a man) to admit to what you said and meant, like a man, I'd have respected you more! Haha.. now is really no reason at all to give even sympathy face.

That's a whole lotta bullshit from Teo. He sure as hell wasn't such a goddamned sweetie pie when he was flushing regulars down the toilet while cutting NS to 2 years.
I'm surprised that what's-his-name hasn't turned up to brag about his boyfriends' SAFOS careers yet.
