I am not in the army, i am still schooling. But yet, i feel that the SAF are not getting the recognition that they deserve. What are they to us? Just some idiots in green uniform, botak, wearing a helmet? WHO ARE THEY DEFENDING? US. We unappreciative people. Is it their duty to do so? I do not think so. Every guy has to go through NS. But what if everyone decides not to go NS and just go detention barracks for 2 to 10 years? Who will defend you? Your neighbour? Malaysia? Indonesia? DREAM ON.
I feel so lao-kui (embarass) when i go out and tell others that i am a Singaporean. Why? Because everyone know that Singaporeans are unappreciative. All they do is complain, write to MP, write to the media and...COMPLAIN MORE...
Sometimes i wonder to myself, "Why are we all so unappreciative? Instead of waiting for others to make the change, why cant we take the first step, take the initiative to change things?"
People always say "Adapt or Die. The environment will never change to adapt to you. But you can adapt to the environment." Singaporeans, lets all get up, stop complaining, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT and MAKE A CHANGE.
If you do not agree to what i am saying, explain why. If you cant explain it, go ECP, dig a hole in the sand, put your head in and take a deep breath. Do not call the ambulance, save the earth and precious resources. Stop pollution and wastage. Just die there.
When will these people give those poor young men who had their freedom taken away for 2 years a break.
maybe they never will....as you know...unappreciative....

I'm tickled by the observation that people who are living in their own "ideal" world love to say this whenever someone comes by and rock their boats with a dose of reality.
Not that I'm full of disdain for NSFs btw. Did my fair share in serving my country and then some. Much as I admire your "appreciation" for the guys in green but you'll find that not everyone has the same pride or discipline when wearing that uniform.
I've just enlisted. Whenever i wear that green uniform i feel so nervous because of the exemplary behaviour we're supposed to show to the public. Instead of feeling proud, i feel like a lowly being subjected to criticisms anytime.

The novelty of serving ns has indeed wear off over times.
Face the fact. We are a city. We aren't really a country.
What we are protecting looks more like a corporate than a country.
How can Singaporeans not complain about the standards of living here if the city itself was built from 0 onwards with our own blood and sweat while the ministers enjoy the finer life?
The truth about developed countries are the contrast between the struggles of its citizens to against the elites.
Just look at our soldiers. How much are they being given to serve this city? Imagine if the millions of dollars given to the ministers were given to our soldiers instead giving them the allowance of a full time employees outside. People will definitely look at soldiers differently.
Its really pathetic how a world class country cannot provide free transport for NSmen. Really.
maybe people saying those are malaysians working in singapore and happen to takje the mrt or buses as army dudes!

it's a vicious cycle that begins from within
starting with ns wayang -> low morale nsf -> no public recognition -> more ns wayang
even if saf were to get any recognition, ex-nsf will know what's really going on and view the recognition negatively (e.g. various sign-on ads)
tl;dr: ts go serve ns first, then you'll know what we are talking about

Pls summarized before you post, I got a headache reading this.
I think u r still young to recognize what is happening. And why people are complaining here and there. We all know that we are wasting our resources, trying to support a paper tiger armed forces. U r claiming that the soliders are defending the country. But seriously, they are defending against WHO?
With globalisation, the nationality get dampened. In my case, my father is an ex-malaysian, my neighbour's wife is an indonesian. My good friend is a PRC. How many people love jap and korean cultures?
If you look around, there are no threat except terroists. And terroism is handled by the police force.
It's hard to say really. Even if we have no army now, I doubt Msia or Indonesia would invade us. However, it may be a different story 20 years down the road and what happens when we haven't trained an army?

when u are a rec, it's like this... [esp with a botak head] when u pass out and maybe have a chance to wear other types of uniforms, u wont feel too negative about it. though ppl will still look at u la.. but wont bother too much

Nobody is saying don't have an army.
If you want to have an army, pay for it. Singapore can afford to pay soldiers a decent wage, but some people think they don't deserve it. Like the father thinks the son doesn't deserve more allowance.
No wonder people don't serve with pride. Eat at hawker centre, don't expect good service.

Having no army is just a hypothesis. What salary for soldiers is decent in your opinion? Do you understand its impact on the budget?
Please consider carefully, all male Unappreciative, Whine & Complain Sinkaporeans also serve NS and now even PRs serve NS, so is what you describle really valid anymore?
Look deeper into reasons why Sinkaporeans complain.
Some of them will include the pressure of living in such a densely populated area, low wages, ever-raising high living costs, non-existenance retirement fund, huge number of foreigners who took away locals jobs and a government that muzzle all dissident views, always trying to hide its wrong doing away with draconian rules.
This country was never free and the government owned the citizens alot, far too much for even LKY's death to even pay for.
you're damn right S'pore was never free..............after the Brits left............the Lee Family became our colonial masters.............
S'poreans complain becoz got no guts to kick out the source of their complaints ............

Don't make me laugh, we are not stupid.
Impact on the budget? Singapore's defence budget is US$8 billion a year and you pay soldiers $400 a month?
The people in charge are asking people to sacrifice so much: pay, space, freedom, 2 years for citizens. If Singapore is a poor country, people will understand. But it is a rich country paying its ministers millions.
How about paying privates S$1000 instead of S$400? That will only equal 1.7% of the US$8 billion dollar defence budget. Not alot to ask.
Of course, if you think a father should not give his son too much money, you are free to put half of it into CPF, so the son cannot withdraw it for another 35 years.

Do take these into consideration:
Defense budget covers defence procurement, vehicle/aircraft/ship and equipment spare parts and maintenance, logistics (fuel, electrical and phone bills, meals, air and sea transport costs, that king koil mattress you sleep on, etc), training, building construction and maintenance, and lots of other stuff, not to forget that cheap beer you buy from the mess....
Say if privates do get $1k a month, CPL all the way up to LTA will increase proportionately. A domino effect for regular pay as well (if not then where's the incentives for signing on?). Multiply by 12. Throw in an extra month for regulars. Can someone lend me a calculator for that?
Logically, by cutting the quality of meals or eliminating it altogether, downgrading to wooden board beds, cutting electricity to the plug you use to charge your handphones or power your other stuff, giving you old or sub-standard equipment to train and fight with, it may be possible to raise that allowance but then again, you'd just end up complaining about those. But I hardly fancy more F5s can take on a few SU-37s or more SM1- tanks can overcome MBTs. Then again, good new toys never come cheap.
I have already annualized the pay and considered the $600 increase for every NSF, it is 1.7%. A 2LT will get $1800 post-increase which is about what an unskilled labourer will get.
Singapore does place the defence budget first, but NSFs are getting the raw end of the deal.
Speaking of toys, I doubt we will ever find a use for those 3 Challenger class (apart from the one used for training) or that the F-5s will make any difference at all (getting the pilots out might cost us some commandos and helicopters instead).
Much of the
defence procurement, vehicle/aircraft/ship and equipment spare parts and maintenance, logistics (fuel, electrical and phone bills, meals, air and sea transport costs, that king koil mattress you sleep on, etc), training, building construction and maintenance
that you listed comes from government-linked or government-owned companies, so the government does recoup alot of these "costs". The $15-a-day SFI meals are only a small part of the equation.

no matter how you calculate the budget does not make sense. Ten year ago it is like this, ten year later will be still like this.

You still have not factored in the increase in REGULAR pay. A 2LT with a $1800 allowance is very close to the starting pay of a regular 2LT. Going by this, regular pay-rolls have to be proportionately increased so on and so forth for all regular servicemen and you end up with the Generals EACH getting much more than half a million a year? So how does THAT amount to ONLY a 1.7% increase?
Even though the 3 remaining Challengers are not as useful as before, they certainly gave us an edge in submarine operations within the region. I'm pretty sure its better to spend the money on the HIMARs, Leopard MBTs and F-15SGs to awe the other armed forces in the region. Or would you prefer the Indonesians laughing at our toys? I'd prefer to have a bigger and better stick than the others.
Since you already pointed out the financial model of the current government, what makes you think they'll even consider the idea of raising NSF ALLOWANCE so drastically?
dun think the defend budget is for u boys. most of the money i beleive r channeled to those garmen related companies.

Why should a NSF 2LT earn any less than a regular 2LT? Is his service any less worthy?
Singapore does not take that view. NSFs and NSmen are the backbone of the force. We have NSmen MAJs going for command school way into their NSmen years. They should be equally compensated.
The SAF need not choose between paying men properly and good weapons.
