FROM November, recruits doing Basic Military Training (BMT) will be armed with one more 'weapon' - a handheld touchscreen device such as an iPad - to sharpen their fighting skills.
Responding to queries from The Straits Times, the Defence Ministry said the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) plans to issue about 8,000 sets, including to every recruit in the BMT Centre and those in other institutes such as the Officer Cadet School and the Specialist Cadet School, as well as to servicemen in the air force and naval training schools.

Frankly speaking, this picture kinda sums up my feelings over this news:
waste of money
Really, what is the use of the iPad to the common soldier?
To give them training materials? Nopes; that's what aide memoires and instruction guides are for. And they never run out of battery power or get spoiled.
To act as fitness trainers? What, they want trainees to go run 2.4km with an iPad under their arms and to use GPS fitness apps to track their progress?
To hone their shooting skills? With what, Angry Birds?
I'm all in favour of giving our soldiers better equipment, but this is ridiculous.
I thought using com lab to try to teach me how to operate a 12.7mm machine gun was quite jialat alr, but this takes the cake.
Maybe for interactive learning of step by step procedures?
UK and US are using Ipads to train their JTACs in the proper sequences.
product placement, increase demand for ipad, cos now even the army uses it
wah so good.
now really pampered the soldier. what's next? used angry birds to kill enermy?
Ipad or Ipad 2? Ipad 2 got camera de leh, i thought no cameras inside camp?
I doubt it will be ipad. Must be no camera de
can use playbook need for speed undercover to train TP also
use tis to track the ?
Its training them to adapt to situation.... when they are caught. lol. And somehow.. managed to escape. And the only thing standing between them and freedom is an iPad. Its complicated functions baffles them... and in 30 seconds, the guards burst through the door and kills them.
/soldier takes out Ipad....points Ipad at enemy structure
*Nuclear launch detected
Give NS boys transportation free of charge better than I pad.
next intake will have kinect
Maybe is give them the latest archos tablets leh...the newest archos tablets are even cheaper than china no brands ones leh...

SINGAPORE - New recruits to Singapore's military, air force and navy are to get a new standard-issue item of equipment besides their rifle - the iPad.
The defence ministry said Monday it will be issuing "about 8,000" of the sleek, touch-screen tablet computers - already wildly popular with the city-state's tech-savvy youth - to recruits from November.
The ministry said it was also planning to issue the devices to other servicemen next year. The cheapest iPad2 device currently retails in Singapore for S$668.
Defence chief Neo Kian Hong said adopting the iPad would allow the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to take advantage of the technological abilities of the city-state's youth.
"By exploiting the use of popular and current information and communications technology, we are able to harness our advantage of today's technologically savvy servicemen," the Straits Times newspaper quoted him as saying.
Troops can use the iPad's built-in camera to take photos and video clips in the field which can be uploaded to the SAF's online platform, LEARNet. Soldiers can use these photos and videos to carry out post-mission assessments, the newspaper said.
Soldiers can send questions to their commanders through a live messaging system and group chat discussions can be held, it added.
The SAF said it was working with private contractors to design apps - micro-programs tailor-made for mobile devices with a wide range of functions - for servicemen.
Singapore maintains a conscript-based military and its armed forces are among the best-equipped in Asia. Every able-bodied male citizen and permanent resident aged 18 and above must undergo two years of military training.
i bet apple will not die down so soon...

Can use ipad's inbuilt camera to take pictures and videoclips but cannot bring camera handphones inside camps.

Joint Terminal Attack Controllers? As in, people who call down airstrikes?
That, I can still understand.
But in this case..... iPads are being given out to recruits!
