Hi, I'm enlisting in december and I have a few questions:
1) Are there washing machines in camp, or do I have to wash my clothes with a brush and bucket. I don't have anywhere to go duing weekends to wash my clothes.
2) I know contact lenses are not allowed during training, but can I bring a pack of monthlies to wear in camp in between training periods? I have no problem wearing them for long periods.
Thanks.
EDIT: Anyone know where I can get a phone with no camera? Or can I just get a normal phone and destroy the camera.
EDIT: Yes, I have black rimmed glasses. I'm asking if I can still use contact lenses.
1.) depends on coy , some have them , but whether you can use them anot..............u need to check with ur sergeants.
2.)There is very little in between training periods during bmt...............unless you wear them to sleep.
Imgaine going for a 4.8km run then rest for 15mins and then you do your strength training
3.)The saf is in the admist of considering to lift the ban on cam phones with cam removes, until then only non cam phones is allowed.
Wonder if SAF camps are the last refuge of payphones in sg.
1) Don't bother washing during BMT, just buy extra to cover for the whole week use, weekend bring back to wash. First, either u damn shack to even go downstairs. Second, u no time to watch ur clothes, so someone else comes along to the washing machine, dump ur clean clothes to the floor and wash his, u also LPPL.
2) There are no guarantee lull periods, ur sergeant can just scream for you to fall in anytime anywhere even when he tells u that you can take a break just a min ago. It can even happen when he calls you guys to fall in 15min after lights off just because some bugger sneak out to call his gf. So I just dunno how you are going to handle, besides if your coy rules states no contacts and ur sergeant finds ur contacts during stand by bed, u can also kena jialat jialat.
phone wise - 7-11 got sell non camera phone. battery can last long. or go to those nokia shop and buy those cheap non-camera non contract phone.. S$40 to S$80 depending on function but most dun have web surfing... but good also, battery can last longer remember to change network selection to manual, or else, will keep pay for roaming charges if u r in tekong.
As for glasses, I think it's depending on coy, last time, my coy did not say must be those black plastic frame buut something not ex or shinning can liao. Do have platoon mates wore contact for range. But I think a bit troublesome, to bring solutions etc to camp also need to wake up earlier to put on contact.

1 day ok for me but if overnight, cannot tahan too dry.....to TS, if you are the sensitive eyes type don't wear contact.
Just wondering would you want to wear contacts in camp? Aesthetic reasons?
They actually have a rule to ban contact lense during training?
I think if u know you're going to be away from your bunks and amenities for a few days, then perhaps it's better to go with specs. If u can, maybe bring both. I wore contacts last time at times, but mostly wore specs as it was easy to take on/off, not worry about a few days without washing etc.
Afterwards wear for a few days without washing and sleep in them somemore - cannot take out then u know.
Top tips: Wash your clothes, at least in the first 2 weeks. (You get only 5 sets, and you dont want to bring home 2 weeks of really dirty clothes for your family etc to wash)
Lenses , washing machine? Depends on your coy, so the answer is usually no, dont risk it.
Glasses black is fine.
Get extra powder (for your body and stinky clothes), get energy pills/drinks etc (You need them), and get febreeze (Since you're not going to wash anything)
I heard that the BMTC has no washing machine.
The reason I ask this is because I'm an emigrant who's coming back for NS, and as such I have no friends or family to help me in Singapore, so I'll have to make some sort of complicated arrangement to launder my clothes if I can't wash them in camp.
Another question: I'll be staying in on the weekends. What goes on then? Do I get extra duties, or do I just idle around?

Well during my time, there were non..but now not so sure. But I think there's but whether is it for perm staff only had to ask. So for you even wkend u still wanna stay in camp? Suggestion: try renting a room in HDB. Because quite boring if u stay in camp all the way.

Nowadays rooms for rent in Singapore can exceed $500 a month. Not really that sensible to rent.

My advice is call them and tell them your situation and see what help can u get? Because staying in camp for 2 years, wah sianz.....even not on duty.
He is still free to leave on weekends, it's just a place to sleep, or rather a place to keep things if he wants to sleep outside some times.
The only problem is being held accountable for rations that you indent but don't eat. It's better not to indent at all- beg from the cookhouse, buy from the canteen or out of camp. Last one not cool however if his camp turns out to be Sungei Gedong.

Wait, Alize, does that mean that I can leave camp in the morning on weekends and return at night on the same day? Obviously it wouldn't work on Pulau Tekong, right?

If they allowed you to stay in camp. I don't see why not? In fact I even go back to camp before during wee hours to drop someone off. Because we don't know where he stayed. But I think u need to seek Mindef approval or at least ask them and see what they say?
If you're cleared to live on the island, you're free to hop on the boat I believe. Perm staff are free to do so whenever they please in their free time.
Does the army still issue the Goretex windbreaker/jacket to recruits?

Should still be standard issue? Now it's the digital camo one. Why? U wanna go out and sell? So did you call mindef up?
