Operationally-Ready NSman Hit by Falling Tree during In-Camp Training
At 11.50 am on 27 Sep 2012, a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)
Operationally-Ready National Serviceman, Lance-Corporal (LCP)(NS) Tan
Tai Seng, 23, a transport operator from 63 Combat Service Support
Battalion, was hit by a falling tree outside the Ama Keng Training Area
at Lim Chu Kang. LCP(NS) Tan was standing in front of his military
vehicle when the incident happened. LCP(NS) Tan was undergoing his
In-Camp Training.
An SAF doctor on site immediately commenced resuscitation efforts on LCP(NS) Tan. A Singapore Civil Defence Force ambulance arrived on site at 12pm. At 12.09 pm, LCP(NS) Tan was sent via the ambulance to the National University Hospital (NUH). The SAF doctor continued resuscitation efforts in the ambulance en route to the hospital, which arrived at NUH at 12.32 pm.
Despite the best efforts by the SAF doctor and the NUH emergency medicine department, LCP(NS) Tan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1.08 pm.
The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF extend our deepest
condolences to the family of the late LCP(NS) Tan. MINDEF and the SAF
are assisting the family in their time of grief and are investigating
the incident. The Police are also conducting a separate investigation.

Lance-Corporal (LCP)(NS) Tan Tai Seng, 23, a transport operator from 63 Combat Service Support Battalion, was hit by a falling tree outside the Ama Keng Training Area at Lim Chu Kang at 11.50am today.
LCP(NS) Tan, who was undergoing in-camp training, was standing in front of his military vehicle when the incident happened.
An SAF doctor on site immediately commenced resuscitation efforts on LCP(NS) Tan.
A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulance arrived on site at 12pm.
About ten minutes later, he was sent in an ambulance to the National University Hospital (NUH).
Resuscitation efforts continued in the ambulance during the journey, and they arrived at the hospital about 12.30pm.
However, LCP(NS) Tan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 1.08pm.
The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF extend its deepest condolences to the family of the late LCP(NS) Tan, while MINDEF and the SAF are assisting the family in their time of grief and are investigating the incident.

As much as I call for stricter safety regulations, I am hard-pressed to say what MINDEF can do about accidents like this.
I mean, what can MINDEF do? Chop down all trees in Lim Chu Kang/ Ama Keng? Cancel all outfield training?
Unless there really was human negligence (say, the tree was in the process of being cut down by a contractor), I think this counts as an Act of God.
These are unforseen circumstances....
