An Officer Cadet's Rites of Passage
Each year, the top 10% of the Recruits from Basic Military Training (BMT) enter OCS to be trained as future Commanders of the SAF after passing all the stringent tests. Aptitude, interest and the potential for developing military leadership competencies are the principal requirements for entry into OCS. The two other sources of entry include the crossovers from the Specialists Cadet School (SCS) and Commandos who have done well during their courses after BMT to qualify for Officer Cadet training, and the regular women Officer Cadets intake.
Beginning 21 Mar 2005, the Officer Cadet Course was reduced from 42 weeks to 38 weeks with the implementation of the 24-month NSF duration in 2004. The revised syllabus aims to achieve the unwavering objectives of producing adaptive leaders capable of operating in dynamic, complex and uncertain environments through a more robust and efficient training system. OCS not only strives to produce Officers with creativity and critical thinking, but uphold a firm grounding in the SAF Core Values. One of the significant initiatives was the infusion of the SAF Leadership Competency Model (LCM) into the curriculum. The LCM has been integrated into key leadership skills of junior Officers and their development. It is one of the major initiatives of the school, in support of the SAFTI MI's Transformation Masterplan, aimed at producing SAF's 3rd Generation Officers.
