This FAQ very good, wish I had read it before I enlist, not like me, blur blur go tekong and kana...

In tekong, each coy will have COS each day. Company Orderly Sergeant (COS). Basically means one of the 3SG kana duty for the day. So one tip to enlistee:- depening on how the 3SG is, some can be very grumpy when doing their COS duty , so try not to "disturb" them. -
i got a qns: in order to pass de swimming test for bmt, how many metres muz i swim? 1 length of de pool is 50m rite?

jus in case u wonder why breaststroke there is tactical reason one - breaststroke is the most silent of the commonly used strokes. -

some other frequently heard terms in army
1. COS - Company Orderly Sergeant : the duty third (usually) sergeant for the company; he is usually NOT the duty sergeant for any of the platoons as he need to do things like cookhouse duty
2. BOS - Battalion Orderly Sergeant (cant rem wats the equivalent in BMTC. SOS? heh..): the duty platoon sergeant for the battalion / school; the one wearing the red band (wats that thing called?);
3. Tonner - 3 and 5 tonner vehicles are the most common. for troop lifting. 5 tonnes are replacing 3 tonnes now.
4. Landrover - the jeep like vehicle most commonly used as safety vehicle
5. Safety Vehicle - vehicle carrying the medic and other first aid equipment that covers training.
6. Front Scout / Rear Scout - the front / rear guy in route / fast marches. supposed to be 50 m infront/behind the main body. usually consists of a sergeant and a men (recruit). nice "appointment" to take during marches!
7. Figure 11, 13, 15 - full size / one third of full size / one fifth of full size targets used in ranges. think the connection between the numbers used and their sizes is obvious.
8. Vehicle Commander - the person sitting next to the driver in any vehicle; usually the highest ranking personnel amongst the passengers.
9. 5 BX - 5 basic exercises : pushup, situp , heel raise, half squat and burpees; 5 BX + run means add one more run item. and theres always the warm up b4 this. i din do ANY 5 BX in BMTC. haha.. wonder if it will be diff now.
10. Attend A/B/C - a result of reporting sick; if u attend a after report sick, good luck to u. it basically means u r totally fine; attend b means light duties and practically means u r excused from most physical activities; attend c, means go home! other combinations include: normal duties, Excuse X : means u can do everything except for activities involving X. the most common are lower limb, upper limb, RMJ (running, marching, jumping), footwear (boots or even PT shoes), uniform (no. 4!)
11. Advanced party / store party - means u have to move out earlier than everybody else to the site of training to bring stores there and set up the place; also means u have to help to get ready all the necessary stores before the day of training; also means u have to help to unload and clean the stores after the training and when u go back to company line. sounds shitty? there are hidden perks too!
12. Target party - means u are in charged to preparing and setting up targets for ranges
13. Dummy rounds - usually blue in colour; for training purposes only
14. Blank - can be fired but mostly emits the sound and abit of flash; CAUTION: firing blanks too close to another person can cause injury! the TSR stated safety distance is 10m.
15. Live Round - self explanatory
16. ROI - Return of Indent: commonly heard of ranges / training, when u have to go around and collect empty cartridges using your helmet . these empty cartridges are known as ROI and have to be returned to the ammo dump (place where one collects ammo)
17. Ammo party - means u help ur sergeant go collect rounds for ranges and return ROI after that. usually equivalent to wake early sleep late.
18. Check clear - check to make sure your weapon is cleared of ANY rounds;
19. Declare - a parade form declaration where all are to declare that they have checked themselves and are sure they are not carrying any rounds or ROI on them; done after ranges/ training.
20. OIL - off in lieu - off that they owe due to training or what not and are returning to you.

lemme start here by providing some basic info:
CDF: chief defence force: MG Ng Yat Chung
CSM: Company Sergeant Major: usually staff sergeant or 2WO (2nd Warrant Officer): the one in charged of discipline and stuff in a company
PS: Platoon Sergeant: the CSM equivalent of a platoon
PC: Platoon Commander: the officer in charge of a platoon
OC: Officer Commanding: the officer in charge of a company.
Hence we have the OC commanding the company, aided by the CSM; PC commanding the platoon, aided by the PS. Each section is led by the Section Commander (usually 3SG)
Ranks:
PTE(nothing), LCP(1 stripe), CPL(2 stripes), 3SG(3 stripes), 2SG(3 stripes + a roof), 1SG(3 stripes + 2 layers of roof), SSG(as in 2SG but with a "crab" inside), MSG(as in SSG but with 3 layers of roof), 2WO(on the epaulet, 1 stripe with a crab), 1WO(as in 2WO but with 2 stripes), MWO(as in 2WO but 3 stripes), SWO(as in 2WO but 4 stripes) (this is for the NCOs or specialists)
2LT(on the epaulet, 1 bar), LTA(2 bar), CPT(3 bar), MAJ(1 crab), LTC(2 crab), COL(3 crab), BG(1 star), MG(2 star), LG(3 star) (this is for the officers)
all those going to BMTC take note: the structure of BMTC is such that the number of persons in a section, number of sections in a platoon and number of platoons in a company are all different from stated above, but BMTC still uses all the terms above. that is cos its a training school and hence there are constraints in following the standard structure strictly.

1. If there is a war (touch wood,touch metal, touch plastic), are those undergoing NS then have to fight at the war?
2. Are there ghost sightings at tekong? 
3. What are u going to do if during 5bx, u broke a bone or sprain ur ankle or something?
4. After BMT, when are you likely to know ur vocation?
5. Any ways to smoke there?

hm.. i would say they would be among the last to be called up, cos they probably are not that well trained yet. they will call up the reservists first.

this issue is contentious... anyway some say yes, some say no. it depends on the person i guess

y specifically during 5bx leh? report sick lor. no big deal?
4. After BMT, when are you likely to know ur vocation?
if u r going to BMTC for BMT, u will know where u go one wk after ur POP. if u r mono-intake, u will be stuck in the service e.g. infantry or guards, that u had ur BMT, but different vocation, and will prob know also one wk after POP
5. Any ways to smoke there?
yes of cos. usually when u r on course u r limited to x number of smoking breaks a day, x usually = 3 for BMT. and u can only smoke at designated areas i.e. within the yellow boxes. outfield is diff story though. -

FBO = full battle order = SBO + full pack.
dunno how to swim? they have swimming lessons there, not to worry. only thing is swimmers get not to attend swimming lessons - means they get free time during swimming lessons. -

if u can, try to at least learn to swim at least 1 length of breaststroke bef going in.....cos it's beri tiring when pple who can swim can rest for 1.5hrs while u gotta learn to swim. moreover, most of de time will kena knock it down by PTIs instead of learning how to swim. n if there r some bastards in ur platoon who made any remarks bout de PTIs during feedback, they will take revenge n haf more time to tekan u during de swimming lessons. -

actualli im quite surprised.. i would imagine most youngsters nowadays should noe how to swim. anyway swimming one lap / 50 m in breaststroke realli is not difficult at all! -

perhaps all who dat come in here n haf yet to enlist r nerds...dats y dunno how to swim juz kidding. from wat i heard from my fren, de failure rate of de swimming test is rather high in his company. bout 1 platoon failed....dats bout 25% of de company (in bmtc sch there r 4 platoons in 1 coy). n de lane at de side has de highest no of pple queueing during de test. -
