The Army Medical Services
The Medical Arm of the Army
HQ AMS is the SSSO HQ to the Army on medical matters both in terms of scope and extent of the functions performed. The roles and functions are :
a) Medical Specialist Staff advisor to Chief of Army on all medical matters.
b) Command and control of the Combat Surgical Hospitals.
c) Command Soldiers Performance Centre and define its research policies.
d) Supervise all Army medical centres.
e) Supervise the operational readiness of all Army Medical units.
f) Develop medical support doctrine and procedures for the Army and supervise their implementation.
g) Develop training standards, systems, and syllabi and ensure the professional training of all Army Medical units and vocationalists.
h) Develop medical support plans in conjunction with Army operational plans, approve medical plans of subordinate units, and ensure the execution of Army medical plans. Responsible for all health matters in the Army.

The History of Army Medical Services
The Early Years
The seed for the formation of SAF Field Hospital was sown in the late 1960s when MINDEF felt the need to establish a mobile hospital between the forward Medical Coys and the civilian hospitals. The objective was to provide resuscitative surgery to casualties so that they could last the journey to the civilian hospitals. As the SAF Medical Services was relatively young in 1960, Singapore Volunteer Medical Officers of the Singapore Medical Association were recruited into the SAF to assist SAF Medical Services in the formation of the First Field Hospital.

The motto emblazoned on the scroll proclaims "LIFE FIRST". This is the essence of the arduous duty and challenge that has confronted medical forces labouring on the battlefields of war & peace throughout history. Remaining steadfast to this mission will mean the alleviation of pain and suffering, and the safeguarding of the Army's vital fighting strength.
Army Medical Services Insignia
The Snake
The Army Medical Services logo is made up of a snake entwined around a sword, the latter resting upon a motto-bearing scroll.
The snake, or serpent, has traditionally been associated with the art and science of medicine. Its origin can be traced to Ancient Greece where temples devoted to worshipping the god of medicine, Aesealapins, abounded. These temples served also as hospitals and in each was to be found a circular pit containing a snake. Retrieved by coiling the serpent from around a wooden rod, it was believed that applying the snake's forked tongue to the diseased body brought about healing.
The Insignia
The sword that is central to the logo replaces the rod and is the recognised symbol of the Army. It is raised in righteousness and strength, unsheathed in readiness to do battle. The entwining of the snake evokes the intimate bond between the Army's Medical Services and its fighting forces.
The Colours
The colours used remain true to those of the SAF's earliest Medical Services logo, namely maroon and gold. The color of the scroll hearkens to the flag of our predecessors, the British Royal Army Medical Corps, whereupon the colours of dull cherry, blue and old gold are to be found

damn, but according to people, we're the 3rd person in any platoon shot by the sniper after the PC and the Platoon Sargeant.... screw the Geneva Convention! -
whahah if i m the enemy i will kill the medic first .. because he is the man of the platoon without him the whole platoon will be wiped out in no time wifout medical coverage ..

I think being a combat medic also very siong. need to do fire movements too and on top of that, carry that stupid stretcher everytime. Their medic bag contains quite a lot of goodies though. hehehe.... once when we don't have enough water, my platoon medic open up a pack of water for us to drink. hahhaha... Dunno what's that pack of water liao, looks like something to drip pple with, taste salty tough. hehehe...

Something more to add, I really like my platoon medic. Hehee. really one hell of a garang soldier. He was initially from cdo, but drop out just before his airborne. Became a medic in my platoon, went for and passed SOF selection
, but his mum doesn't wants him to sign on after he was interviewed by the CO.
Anyway, i think all the guys in my platoon are great people. But this medic just stands out a little bit more. ehehe -
You have a great medic. My medic still lacks combat fitness, during a short 2km battlecourse for atec stage one, we had sniper drill, we ran and stop around 100m later. As of sniper drill there will be one casualty, and we call for medic. There he goes, " Coming, coming! " and when he reach there, he just collapse. You know? he was supposed to give medical attention instead he was given instead.

But that medic became BCS property liao. We have another medic who replaces him. he is also very good. look like mohammad ali, very big and fit, a 3sgt medic.
Hartmann solution? i thought juz mixed some plain water with salt. hehehe... but yeah, it's a really good drink for those shack out faces. -
those who are trained to be Class 1 Medics are usually dragged to become BCS medics... those Class 2 medics like me stay with the platoon...

finally someone speaks for me !!!!!!!11 they think medic all are kengsters ... haiz ... they dont understand how a medic works ... they work 24 hrs no time ....
after a battle is where the medical team comes in .... when all the rest is ROC ... we are the one who need to still treat the casuality and send them to BCS for evalcuation ... but they still cheong with the man ... in the bashing and cheong to clear the objective .. the only difference is they nvr shoot only. what is this word coming to? -

this is cos some how, from wat i haf observed (wich may be wrong), our army does not emphasis alot on buddy aid and the actual use of medics during its exercises - all exercises get cut after an objective is taken, and a complete "re-org" is seldom practiced. and in alot of our exercises, we assume tt we will haf 100% top-up of strength after each mission - this happens even in atec. so theres no need for the medic to be too hardworking mah. all the supposedly "dead" or "injured" soldiers will be revived b4 the next mission. its creating a wrong perception and mindset amongst all.Originally posted by antoh:in war ar .. i think most of us will be hiding behind cover .... we have no exception but to shoot us like a rifleman .... i dont think is very fair ... at times i rather return my armband to them since they say us until like no value to the platoon like that
