Survival skills are not taught unless you're in the Scout, BRC and commando. Basically units that has a small group mission.
The rest are "cannon fodder". -

Err.... there will be some things not going to be experienced by all enlistees.
Tips for infantry ex. lancer,
Ex. Nomad: navex
You are out there with your section, doing topo. It will rain mostly after 4pm, complete darkness at 7-8pm( close eyes open eyes still the same ).
Before the start of your navex, empty unnecessary combat green packs to lighten up the fieldpack. Use two trashbags and as few ziploc bags as possible, you won't want to spend hrs declaring your rubbish( you have to declare your rubbish, no littering is allowed )
Heavier stuff like 840 signal set etc should be rotated among the section while the persons doing the topo carry lighter loads. So that they can come close to a check point and leave the whole section there while they go search for it.
Bring extra solid fuel if you can, to cook, to dry and to keep warmth in the night. Use stream water for cooking( always collect stream water with mouth of bottle facing the direction of flow, not against the direction of flow ). Hot coals left after a big fire is great for heating up green combat ration packs. Always keep your ration rubbish air tight, the ants travels in divisions.
When you want to sleep, take off your socks and cover the openings of your boots with the socks( wear it around the openings ) to prevent insects from getting in. Use commercial groundsheet as they are 100% waterproof. I wore vest and gortex to sleep. Others can try commercial poncho, keeps you warmed.
Oh.. there's still loads to share but i can't recall them now. Take care for those going brunei, either for jcc or ex. lancer. -
bring hammock, don't sleep on the ground, apply alot of SAF insect repellant on the strings of the hammock that are attached to the trees. DRINK LOTS OF WATER if possible but must ration it too or else you'll die there. Set up camp around 4pm+ as sky gets dark soon, set up small fire to repel mosquitoes, don't sleep on top of knolls coz' lotsa' lightnings. Don't drink stagnant water, make sure got medical supplies, don't anyhow IV if anyone kenna heat disorders coz' if done improperly will caused death. bring lotsa' SAF insect repellant! don't panick when you are lost, don't go down into swamps of unknown depth. Have fun in lancer. hahahah

always have at least 2 sticks of SAF insect repellant in your webbing. don't waste $ on commercial repellant. It is so strong that it can be use to wipe off permanent marker prints on map overlays. hehehe.. very handy for pple with maps.

Strangely, we didn't get bitten by any mosquitoes but i did get bitten by sandfly(again) at one place where we slept there. Oh, you can bring vinegar, the leeches will fall off when in contact with it.
Crossing stream, a two inches deep stream can have waist deep mud under it. I experienced it. A walking stick is really useful during navex. And there, you can test the mud depth before you take your next step. -

Step 1 take a tissue paper, split into two thinner parts.
Step 2 start from one edge, roll into a thin string-like
Step 3 apply small amounts of SAF insect repellent evenly on the roll. (Do not dampen it, or else it won't burn continuously.)
Step 4 coil it around your finger to make a coil out of it.
Step 5 light it up like a mosquito coil.
There you have it, a mosquitoe coil using tissue from combat ration and SAF insect repellent in you SBO. If you forgotten to bring, this is the next best thing. -

so wat most of us did was to transfer the contents of another tube into one full tube. so there u haf it, the contents of 2 in jus 1 tube! -
