Half year difference

  I am very curious on why there are two different terms of service for male citizens in National Service ?

  2 yrs - those who attain highest rank of LCP and below. usually for those whose HEA is O lvl or NTC
  
  2 yrs 4 mths - those who did not go for PTP, and whose highest rank is CPL or higher.
  
  2 yrs 6 mths - those who went for PTP b4 BMT, and whose highest rank is CPL or higher.

  It's based on your education level and unit. For diploma, jc and above, they have to serve half a year more. For commandos and police, they have to serve 2 and half yrs unless for those exceptional vocations.

  Is it because those with lower education level are better soldiers and they mastered their skills in 2 years ?

  generally, the term of service is pegged to the rank, not the HEA, although the HEA has a large influence over the highest rank achieved.
  as for why the term of service is pegged to the rank, i haven thought of a cogent justification. mabbe they follow the paradigm tt the more capable should do more? probably also to expose them so as to prepare them for potential promotions and higher appointments during reservist.

  hm.. i never thought of it tt way. but there certainly r some guys who will try all ways and means to siam tt extra 1/2 yr.

  not really, you can choose to serve NS first then go back to poly...but not JC

  there was a collegue of mine who served 1 yr 10 months (according to his record)..
  Did not attend PTP, was from ITE (now in Poly)
  
  He was one hell of an excellant CIPA though, so good his understudy had marked difficulty in maintaining the standard...
