To update Army personnel on the present efforts to revamp the Army''s urban warfare capabilities, the Urban Warfare Seminar 2003 was held on 12 September. The seminar consisted of presentations held at the HQ Infantry Auditorium, a technology exhibition, a drill demonstration and a live firing display.
Among the speakers at the seminar were Chief Infantry Officer, COL Chiang Hock Tew and Head Doctrine of HQ Infantry, LTC Paul Koa. The presentations touched on the impetus for the Army''s urban warfare initiative, the present challenges faced by the Army in urban warfare and the part technology will play a part to make the urban warrior of the future more lethal, mobile, survivable and sustainable.
The revised Fighting In Built-up Areas (FIBUA) drills to be adopted by Infantry and Guards Battalions from the next workyear were also covered at the seminar. One feature of this
new set of drills is that it takes into account the presence of innocent civilians who may be caught in the firefight. The technology exhibition invited participants to have a hands-on experience on the Advanced Combat Man System, the Super Lightweight Automatic Grenade Launcher, the FIBOT (FIBUA robot), unattended ground sensors and door breaching equipment, amongst others. There was also a demonstration of the revised FIBUA drills.
The seminar came to a successful close with participants being treated to a live firing display conducted at the Tekong Battle Innoculation Course, which featured the capability of a stand-off door breaching ammunition.
