REFER to the letter, 'Transport perks, please' (ST, Feb 4), by Mr Timothy Lin Zhiliang.
All Full-time National Servicemen (NSFs), including recruits, are eligible for concessionary travel rates on SBS and Tibs buses, and the MRT. This is one of the benefits given, regardless of rank, in recognition of their service to the nation during their term of active service.
All NSFs will be issued with an NSF ez-link card, upon request, to enable them to enjoy concessionary rates when using public transport.
NSFs have to purchase a monthly concessionary pass to enjoy concessionary rates. This is available at the TransitLink Ticket Office at all MRT stations and bus interchanges.
There are three concessionary travel-fare schemes: the Bus Concession Pass which costs $61 per month, the Train Concession Pass which costs $50 per month and the Hybrid Concession Pass which costs $111 per month. NSFs may choose any of these schemes according to their individual travel needs.
Mr Lin was advised to apply for the NSF ez-link card after his Basic Military Training (BMT). As recruits doing BMT are allowed to book out only over the weekend from the third weekend, it is probably not cost-effective for them to use any of the concessionary travel schemes during their BMT.

The rationale for this advice may not have been properly communicated to Mr Lin. Hence, the possible misinterpretation that recruits are not eligible for concessionary rates when using the public transport system.
He may wish to approach his unit manpower officer for further assistance on this matter.
