About the Scheme
Officially inaugurated on 5th April 2001, the scheme aims to develop a group of professional IOs to meet today's highly dynamic and sophisticated intelligence environment.
The scheme offers a challenging and rewarding military career in the SAF Intelligence. It will appeal to you if you have a keen interest in current affairs, geopolitical development and if you are technically inclined. The scheme provides job rotation in the functional areas of Analysis, Collection, Operations, Planning, Research, Technical and Human Resource Management.
There will be a recruitment interview conducted to select applicants with the following attributes:
Inquisitive and Analytical Creative Ambiguity Tolerant Decisive Self-Motivated Good Communication skills
As the scheme is meant for Officers only, you will first have to qualify for OCS on your own merit and be subsequently commissioned as an Officer.
Route of Advancement
The Route of Advancement (ROA) of an IO is the rate at which he ascends the ranks and takes up appointments of increasing importance and greater responsibility.
IOs can expect a full military career within the SAF Intelligence in which Officers progress to senior positions within the Intelligence Units and Departments on the basis of performance and potential.
Enlistment
Training Roadmap
The Intelligence Officers' Scheme provides comprehensive training to ensure that all IOs are properly trained and developed. The training encompasses general development and specialised intelligence courses to equip IOs with the knowledge to progressively take on greater responsibilities
and challenges.
The training offers courses up to the level of the SAF Command and Staff Course. Those with academic pre-requisites will also be given the opportunities to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Starting Gross Salary
The salaries shown below are not inclusive of year-end, performance-based bonuses, or Market Adjusted Allowances (MAA). Diploma Holders are eligible for MAA of $200 per month as a Cadet, and $110 per month as 2nd Lt for a maximum of 12 months. Also, they do not include SAVER contributions.

The Intelligence Corps is a vital element within the SAF, entrusted with the responsibility of collecting and analysing real time information and helps in the sacred task of preserving the security of Singapore.

How is the IO vocation managed?
The IO vocation comes directly under the privy of the Joint Intelligence Directorate (JID). As such, the career of all IOs will be manged directly by JID and Joint Manpower Personnel Department (JMPD).
What kind of career can I expect as an IO?
The IO scheme offers a challenging and rewarding military career in SAF Intelligence at the highest level. You will be trained and systematically groomed along a specialised route of advancement in the field of intelligence. At the heart of this route of advancement is a conviction to develop each IO to his/her fullest career potential.
What is the rate of promotion?
Promotion is based on performance and potential. The better you perform and the higher your potential, the faster you move up the ranks.
Are the IO salary, welfare benefits and performance bonus different from other vocations?
No. The IO vocation enjoys the same salary (see Salary Scale), welfare benefits (see Welfare and Benefits) and rate of promotion (see Career Advancement) as other combat vocations in the SAF.
What if I am intending to further my studies?
We encourage our Officers to complete their higher education as soon as possible. Officers who have secured scholarships such as LSA will be allowed to defer from service to further their studies upon commissioning or when the course's semester begins whichever is earlier.
Am I constrained to any particular courses when I attend higher studies?
No. Applicants are welcomed to pursue all disciplines approved by the SAF. But here in the Intelligence Corps, applicants are also advised to take up job relevant courses.
Do I have to work for the SAF during my vacations while I am studying?
Yes. Depending on the need for manpower, arrangements will be made for you to be attached within the SAF while you are on studies vacation. This is to keep you updated with the latest developments in the SAF. You will be paid while on studies vacation.

Have acouple of qns re IOs. regulars offrs are constantly rotated betw staff and field work, intel is largely a staff dept isit? then how is the rotation done? Also, how is the tri-svr term like for intel offrs?
Anyone noes wat is the selection criteria for IOs?

intel work involves more than staff work - e.g. s2 branch's work involves intel, and tt involves the scouts; BRCs too. so i guess wat it means is tt for IOs their rotation is such tt all their work - staff, instructional, or command, will be with units and positions related to intel work.

the IOs i know sit in air-con office and earn extra allowances...
they no need to go jungle... lucky bastards -
well, IOs i know are civillian officers of mindef.
and from what i know, each IO have their own duties and profiles.
even IOs from their own team wouldn't know what profiles they are holding. so it's not a surprise people think they do nothing.

Hahaha. Ya, those are the IO i met too. THe only time they need to go to the jungle is during the JCC period during their OCS time. They even fail their IPPT and only manage to pass near the workyear ends. Is the selection of the IO held during OCS course or the cadet already know that they are going to be IO?

Sounds like it is very interesting to be an IO. Another consideration for me if I decided to sign on.
