What are tapes for?

I heard from a lot of people and from here to bring black tapes for BMT. What is the exact use of the tape exactly? Secondly any black tapes will do regardless of the width of the tapes rite? Thanks

to camouflage those shiny parts of things... to tie magazine (for putting bullets) end-to-end
To use as shoelace in case yours broke -

its usually the common black tape used for electrical insulation - standard width and all.
also, you may like to noe tt black strings are very useful too - for securing of stuff. -
Need to bring clear tape also rite?

Used mainly for topo exercise/missions when u need to fold your map to small size and cover them up with those clear plastic sheets. So clear tapes might be useful here -
