SAF Day 2004

Highlighted in the military calendar, SAF Day is a reminder of the importance of national defence. It is an occasion to renew the pledge of allegiance to the President and the country, to remember comrades-in-arms who died in the course of service to the nation, and to give recognition to the best in the armed forces.
This year's SAF Day on 1st July marks the 39th year of existence of the Singapore Armed Forces.
SAF Day Parade 2004 is an evening parade of pomp and pageantry. The Parade will showcase the SAF as a modern, integrated and cohesive fighting force that is ready and capable of safeguarding the security and sovereignty of Singapore. It will also bring about greater confidence in the SAF and instil a sense of pride amongst past and present Service personnel.
A total of 4 Guard-of-Honour contingents formed by the SAF Provost Unit, Army Best Combat Unit, Navy and Air Force together with 14 supporting contingents, 34 Regimental Colours and 3 State Colours will be on parade.
The Guard-of-Honour (GOH) will comprise 4 contingents of 72 participants each. They will be carrying the M16 rifles and attired in the No. 1 ceremonial uniform. The Marching Contingents of 48 participants each will be carrying the SAR 21 rifle, a weapon developed and manufactured solely in Singapore.
Sembawang Air Base has been given the honour of organising the SAF Day Parade 2004 to be held at the SAFTI Military Institute. The Reviewing Officer for the parade will be His Excellency, the President of Singapore -
FORM OF PARADE
Inspection of Guard-of-Honour:
The GOH will comprise 4 contingents of 72 participants each. They will be attired in the No. 1 ceremonial uniform with M16 rifles. SAF Provost Unit will provide the No. 1 Guard. The Army Best Combat Unit will form the No. 2 Guard. The Navy will form the No. 3 Guard. The Air Force will provide the No. 4 Guard.
Recital of the SAF Pledge:
We, Members of the Singapore Armed Forces, Do solemnly and sincerely pledge that: We will always bear true faith and allegiance to the President and the Republic of Singapore. We will always support and defend the constitution. We will preserve and protect the honour and independence of our country with our lives
One Minute Observance of Silence:
The one minute silence is to remember our comrade-in-arms, the precious sons of Singapore who have lost their lives in the course of service in the SAF.
Presentation of Best Unit Awards:
The Minister for Defence will present the Best Unit and Best NS Unit awards. Families of the Best Unit's Commanding Officer will be invited to witness the presentation.
Presentation of SAF State Colours:
The President will present the SAF State Colours to the Best Combat Unit.
Trooping of Colours:
In the past, Trooping the Colours before a battle served as a means of identification and as a rallying point for the soldiers in battle. Colours have historic and symbolic significance as battle honours were accorded to them for gallant acts and sacrifices made by the men. Today, Colours have become the emblem of loyalty and courage, and signifies the high battle readiness of the unit. The No. 1 Guard will serve as the Colours escort.
March Past:
The Parade will march off with the Colour Party leading, followed by the GOH, Marching Contingents, and finally, the SAF Band. -

AWARD WINNERS
SAF Best Unit Competition
Introduced in 1969, the SAF Best Unit Competition is held annually to promote a competitive spirit among units and to bring out the spirit of excellence in the SAF. Units are judged on areas such as combat proficiency, marksmanship, manpower matters, logistics matters and security. A similar competition for NS units, the Best NS Unit Competition was introduced in 1993. It aims to enhance the Army's NS Battalions' operational readiness and promote greater espirit-de-corps among operationally ready national service units and men.
