I just got my posting today and will be reporting in on monday. Posted to HQ 8 SAB. Vocation is COMBAT MEDIC. at Keat Hong Camp 1. I'm expected to stay in as I'm required to bring along my duffle bag and field pack with all SAF items.
Question is... shouldn't I be posted to some Medic School to undergo some training phase before I get attached to Units like Keat Hong Camp which is an Armour Camp if I'm not wrong?
Anyone in this same situation before? Maybe can help clarify my doubts.
Maybe some info or advice for me? What kind of training will I go through? Any confinement wk? Stay in all the way or I'll get weekdays off too? Any specific thing to bring along?.... Is it really that siong like what they say? -

Hmm.. let me guess... you are from Echo gryphon or kilo.
Anyway, there shouldn't be anything wrong with your posting. What's most likely going to happen is you report to keat hong camp as combat medic for few weeks first.
Then you are ATTACHED to SMM to take the medic course... You most probably be doing nothing tlll the next Medic course opening.... (approx early october). -
yakult straw!!
do not be alarmed by the thickness of the needle/catheter you have to stab into your buddy's vein and he into yours..
for military use where they need to flush a lot of fluid into your body, they'll use the coarsest catheter for maximum flow...
buy a few long-sleeved shirts coz you'll look like a junkie with tracks (serious!) when you book out..
learn to block out pain, especially when that needle is driven into your arm and your buddy starts to "topo"... be good to your buddy.. very good to him!
but then, at the end of the course, you'll take with you lessons and skills that are relevant in civilian life and will stand you in good stead when emergencies strike
it is a noble vocation!

I was from Kilo coy... sianzz... new life in new unit with new faces and no clue wat the hell I'll be doing.... u a combat medic too? It says I'm posted to HQ 8SAB... is there like alot of others eg. 1, 2, 3,....8 SAB etc? HQ does it mean relax realx one.. or must chiong suah like mad with the armour guys?
Btw, those medic in tekong during BMTC that appears everytime when there's training going on... like laze around damn relax nothing to do.. those are combat medics too? -

there are 2 parts to that needle...
the needle itself and the "yakult straw" plastic bit which covers the needle... after penetration into the vein, the plastic bit is pushed into the vein and the needle is withdrawn...
that's the painful bit...
also, you'll learn to give injections.. on each other also using sterile normal saline... the more you relax, the less painful injections are
other than that, the rest are normal training..
you'll be trained how to do basic triage, first aid, CPR and also basic knowledge in medicines and drugs.. also taught how to work in a medical centre, basic nursing and patient care...

One of the more useful vocations in the army whose skills can be used in post-NS life.

pls be prepared tt u might be posted to 40sar or 46sar after your course at SMM if there is manpower shortage at the units..cos tt wht happen during my time at 40sar.

as given reason by many ppl, you will be posted to your current unti before going to SMM reason being there is not avail course ... this batch is p20 i think(i m p12, meaning i m going ORD). normally the course will be on apr, june, aug, jan.
hmmm jabbing is a terrifying experience. even now i m givin my arms to jab because they are too boh boh. 60 to 70 over punctured sites over my r arm. 16G is power man.
being a medic you must not be afriad of blood or vomitus. -
