if the main purpose of JCC is learning how to survive in the jungle on your own, doesn't it defeat the purpose when they give u the quill to kill.
aren't u suppose to learn how to catch animals yourself like setting traps etc, expose yourself to catching different types of animals and how to cook them? -
The trainees do learn how to set up the various traps to catch small animals and birds. During the survival phase, they are required to set up such traps too. Learning how to kill quill is just one of the skills that the instructors impart to the trainees. They will also be taught how to kill other animals such as a rabbit, chicken and sheep... but of course, the latter part do not need to be executed (else the killing would be too much). Therefore, the trainees are just required to know how to and properly execute the killing of a quill.
I do agree with you that it would have been good if the trainees are told to catch their own quills instead of the birds being given to them. But we must understand that time is also a constraint... Given enough time, everything can be taught properly, but the cadets have only three weeks timespan in Brunei, of which they still need to carry out other trainings.
Then again, there will be this issue of whether the Brunei authorithy would be happy if they learn that every time a JCC course is held, there will be that number of quills (or other animals) less in their jungle. Therefore, it is the best choice that the SAF provides for this themselves. -

I've seen female regulars pull off a quails head without batting an eyelid. Puts some of the guys to shame.

Still remember my school last time got NCC,
the NCC want to pull male members only..
so very simple..during the CCA Day..
so we took out a table..
and we put a live chicken..
den we saboh 1 guy to be nominated for the chicken chopping
den we invited the gals along
(they didn't know) LOL!
did the live chopping and off went the head
the gals was shocked like siao..!
den the gals got the bf beside them ..
so the bf get free hug also
Guess it filtered the men away from the sissys.
You know why i remembered it so well?
cause i was the one who cleared the dead chicken..
or forget it..during the bbq later,
to celebrate the high amount of males joining
i bbqed the headless chicken and gave it to my CO..

Nah, quail heads are easy to pull off. It's the chicken that's kinda hard.

Don't worry, there is not so many chickens and snakes in OCS, the most they kill 1-3 chicken and 1 snake.
