M-16 wise, its a battle proven weapon,no doubt. For me,I find that it is too long, cumbersome at times, feels heavy when supported for long periods while standing and firing. And its rather IA prone.
In my opinion, the best weapon is the M-4 Carbine,Car-15 Carbine or G36C Carbine.
There's another topic in itself, the comparing of the SAR-21 & any of the Carbines. I also think it's better to compare between them than with the M16.
In fact, between Tekong (M16) & reservist (M203), my assigned weapon in Arty was a Colt Commando CAR-15 carbine all the way. I dunno how my outfit ended up with them; perhaps the shortenable butt stock was deemed more practical as we traveled in the M113's. But then the Armored unit who shared the same camp as us were using the elongated M16's.
The CAR-15 felt more plastic-ky compared to the M16, but then we weren't complaining. The SAR soldiers who saw us probably envy us & our "SOE-ish" profile, & running the SOC with them was also a blast.
But, with the various bells & whistles being experimented with the SAR-21, I don't think the CAR-15 can offer any competition. As stated in another thread, I see the SAR-21 as a true 3G weapon. For one, the radical laser-pointer suggests the weapon's more suited for close-quarter combat - yet remains generally versatile - as compared to the 1G, utilitarian M16/AR15 variants.
& now they're trying to attach a camera to it to shoot around corners!
Better yet, it's Made In Singapore, i.e. something to call our own.
My only worry is with physical robustness: hopefully it can be as reasonably durable as the CAR-15, whose buttstock needed quite a bit of maintainence to repair the wear-&-tear near the end of our NS.
