It is true that no commando will rise above COL rank,
unless..... you take off the red beret and join Guards or Infantry.
Commando unit is too small, being just a battalion. Unless commando numbers increase to form a brigade then we will have a Commando General.
Anyway heard Lo Yong Poh is the only one who stormed the plane in his jeans and bullet proof vest over the t-shirt. He's hardcore man.

Anyway, about his nephew... then REC B. Lo was intentionally transferred to a "xiong" bmt company.
he then became DY S1 of Unit
As for COL Lo's price tag on his head in afghanistan... it is a probable story since he was sent to afghanistan as part of a UN Mission. he was a military adviser there and then.
from then on.. he became CO Sispec, he intro 32 km march and 22 km run.
then to COMD BTMC (180 MID), achieved Quality Class Award + ISO 9002 .. and he retired.... leaving much legends in the SAF.
one of the well known story is he ordered a 2LT to back crawl in a "shallow" pool of water. He did that because the "shallow" pool is supposed to be really shallow. but the 2LT was the conducting officer for this particular lesson and never bothered to check the depth and turn out every recruit who back crawl had to inadvertantly swallow muddy water as the pool of water is that deep.

i was posted to HQ MES just at lee sheng wu was posted out of HQ MES. same office. heard he went into intel.
in the same office, is the son of an embassador who has managed to be permanently posted to HQ MES.
at OETI, there was a b mech who's a president scholar, degree in economics from university of chicago. now he's either a medic, or a clerk. -

There was once the BG came driving right to the wingline on a weekday, and ordered the TCO to call his son down. He then drove off with his son immediately without a word, leaving all the instructors shocked and hiding in their offices, not daring to come out.. -

heard of several funny stories, best of which would be one where he invited the other lobos in office back to his place for dinner together with LKY and then began blasting PAP right infront of him. he eventually got fed up, banged the table and left

One of the guys in my platoon was the son of a high-ranking fella at SingTel. Despite being a competitive canoeist and bodybuilder at my JC, he just fell apart during BMT. By the end of our 5k runs every morning, he was dragging behind and bawling like a baby, and us poor sods had to go back and drag that sack of sh*t along to keep the platoon together . Useless bugger - even the really unfit guys kept it together better than him. On night in the third week of BMT (IIRC), the old man turned up and took him home.
A year later, we came across him and he'd become an Engineer officer. Needless to say, none of us bothered saluting.
Then again, our OC at the time was CPT Lim Teck Yin, who, as Lim Bo Seng's grandson, probably had enough heritage to be a WH. He was originally a Guards officer, converted to Commandos and is now a Colonel in Armour. His beret may be black now, but he'll take a little bit of red with him when he gets his star.
Apparently, there was a President's Scholar with a red beret back in the early eighties who was expected to become the first Commando BG, but I heard he abruptly quit for civvie street as a major or LTC. Ah well, there might be another one down the track - my last company 2i/c was a high-flyer who made major by the age of 30 and went off to Gombak, but I don't know what colour his beret is now (he was originally an Armour officer who converted).
That said, I doubt that the structure of the SAF's bureaucracy will allow for our version of PDLB. -

Hmm didn't know converting to CDO was common last time, my fren tried to convert back in 2002, and was refused, and the treatment he recevied there was pretty bad, i heard from couple of his platoon mates that during his attachment at Hendon Camp, he was attached to one of the companys who where in the midst of their BMT field camp in tekong, then following their fieldcamp, the company sat tonners to the pier while he was made to run/walk back ..
But my OC did tell me that ppl who signed on CDOs back in the early 90s recevied quite harsh treatment from the regulars. -

Yeah, all of us were stunned when the old man came and plucked Junior out of there. He must have pulled some serious strings.
Converting wasn't all that common. The two officers I mentioned were two out of only three that I know who went through conversion.
Well, from my experience, none of the regulars got treated any worse than the NS guys. Then again, we were all busy getting clobbered, so maybe I just didn't notice any differences. -

Seems also that this warrior's path is similar to that taken by israeli army officers from elite units as they rise to the top.. armour is like the key station of the cross to go thru' in order to get the brass ring.. -
