I can't say that NS doesn't waste time, but it's not a total evil either. You grow wiser and your people skills get better.

To "They" (& indirectly Cpl Ho):
Sorry, but I take the pro-establishment stand. JW's aren't that ostracized here. Yes, there's prejudice but nothing to stop you from going to school, making friends, getting married or - for that matter - not singing the anthem or reciting the pledge. People are suspicious only of those who don't expressively integrate themselves into mainstream society. This is a fundamental conflict your brand of faith followers must resolve first, before the general populace is to accept you. Singapore is too small for any religious enclaving or segregation.
Besides, I believe the official government stand distinguishes between being a member of the banned SCJW or owning its literature (which are offences) from that of being a JW itself or affirming its beliefs (technically, neither are illegal here). Also, local legislation only circumscribes the practicing of its activities from where they counter the national interest, most notably with conscription.
&, even then, they jail lawbreakers not for being a JW, but rather on the basis of being a conscientious objector. That's what the so-called human-rights activists/sympathizers conveniently overlook about the Singapore environ:
(a) local male citizens DON'T get to choose whether or not to enlist for NS, regardless of motivation. Moonies & pacifists - if any - can also expect the same legal treatment.
(b) there's no mass genocide or imprisonment of law-abiding JW's here.
Perhaps a non-military variation of NS will be established someday that can accomodate JW's. But until then - however imperfect the system - see it from the other side's viewpoint: Yeah, I'll feel mightily aggrieved if I have to serve & JW's are exempted.
Can't speak for unreasonable employers, but I wouldn't look at a JW's stint in the DB stereotypically as a penalty or even rehabiliation myself. -

However, i've nothing against people who are 'conscientious objectors' BUT they must accept whatever penalty given to them for taking a stand, and I think all JW know this...
