As i'm not very educated (higher nitec only), they think that i wont be promoted.. i thought they have like a scheme till retirement? why not iron rice bowl? Forgive me for my ignorance

as for iron rice bowl, this concept no longer applies in the current economy. you have to perform in order for the organisation to want to keep you. -
Thanks. If I sign on, am i allowed to take up a private diploma course (part time course)? Do SAF accepts private diploma like MDIS or PSB? thanks

I urgently need help on how to discourage my parents from thinking that signing on with SAF is guaranteed "iron rice bowl"? Although it is my ambition, but after considering what I would be doing after 10 years or so when I'm kicked out or whatsoever, I really don't know whether I should sign on... the world outside is different from SAF, at age 30, no experience in any other jobs, even if you manage to get into one, people will still talk.

FYI, many spec nowadays are asked to leave after finishing their 10 year contracts. No more iron rice bowls, only a selected few who they think are "more capable" are offered to stay till retirement. But this is also subjected to review, if dun perform still can ask u to go. This is SAF new policy for a younger and leaner force. Keeps everyone on their toes.
But i pity some of my friends who are asked to leave, in their 30s, family, children, house, car...... no experience. got 1 found job but have to take pay cut of 40%, a fresh poly grad's pay!
dont understand why employers' always say no experience. at least give a few hundred more lah in appreciation to services rendered to the nation. -

It's because we are not a combat-oriented ofrce first and foremost, that's why those with premier comabt skills but lacking in paper qualifcations don't cut it at the top.
And how many SAFOS guys actually study military history or war?Most of them are studying engineering and business. That shows the direction our forces are going, getting them ready for the private sector because we can't afford to have every regular stay in the Corps until they are old and grey. -

if the SAF restricts its potential scholars to studying only military-related degrees, it will be limiting the pool of talents it can tap on - in singapore, how many people are going to limit their own options by diving into such a specific field?
furthermore, it does not take a person to have a military basic degree to perform well or better than those without one in the military, and neither is it true that those without such a degree will lose out or perform worse. our past SAF leaders would be able to prove this point, and so, i believe, do the soldiers from other professional armies in the world.
it would be more prudent if the force can take in bright undergraduates from various fields, so as to have diverse viewpoints and backgrounds, and subsequently award a postgraduate military scholarship to those who have outstanding performance and indicated interest in a long term career with the armed forces. -

why do you have doubts about your own capability? is it just a unsubstantiated fear? examine this and perhaps you would be more confident of your career move. -
