The SAF's role is to ensure the protection of Singapore, period. Up to you on how to intrepret this - whether in terms of operational readiness,
or meeting existing safety & security challenges, or as a model for nation building, or strategically participating in UN peacekeeping missions, et al.
If you can, try to attend one of them OCS commissioning parades, or at least read (online/print) transcripts of the speeches given. Propagandic as it may sound, they do serve as serious reminders for the newly-appointed leaders on what's expected of them.
Google around for, in particular, Wong Kan Seng's addresses; I find him to be the most fluid of speechmakers on this topic.
Sorry if my thread is not clear... talking about the SAF generally, of which NS is a part of...
I'm not really searching for the official stand on SAF, rather more interested in forumnites' opinions on whether the role of SAF has changed and whether it is ready to face the challenges of the future...
