  got lah. i work under HQSCE. last month got a lot of 2LT/LTA/CPT come to take the Professional Knowledge Examinations (PKE). heard from the sergeants there it's a exam to test your military knowledge before they consider promoting u.

  hm... a few things you said. first, its some sergeants, and second, you HEARD from them. not to discount their credibility.
  
  2LTs get promoted to LTA after one year of service, unless they foul up big time. if there is such a test, perhaps, as you mentioned, it's only meant for engineers. poor things.

  if 2lt are only promoted to LTA after 1 yr of service doesn't that effectively mean that they are promoted to LTA upon ORd, with the new 2 yr ns?
  anyway other than doctors, are they no NSF captains?

  If it's any comfort, most of these LTAs won't be promoted any further into their reservist service. Only the KAH appointments will make CPT for the latter period.
  
  IMO The NS period for commissioned officers is still very "coddled", implicitly deferring to the signed-on PC/OC/OC's & RSM/CSM's. It's only during ICTs that the former lot truely get to blossom in running the show.
