[b][u]Welsh departs
2.John Welsh celebrated New Year by making his move to Hull City permanent but admitted his beloved Liverpool will always hold a special place in his heart.
The boyhood Reds fan finally ended his long association with the club on January 1 by completing his switch to the Tigers, with whom he has spent the last three months on loan.
An England under-21 international, Welsh joined the Liverpool Academy as a 10-year old and rose impressively through the ranks. He made his first team debut under Gerard Houllier against Ipswich in 2003 and in total made 10 senior appearances.
But after being informed by Rafael Benitez earlier this season that opportunities would be limited he jumped at the chance to join Hull on loan and is now looking forward to the challenge of keeping them in the Championship.
"Liverpool was obviously a tremendous club to be at," he says. "But you can only play so much reserve team football. I will miss Liverpool. I'd always supported them as a kid but I've got ambitions in my life.
"I want to achieve things and I see this as a step up. It's the right decision for me. Hull is a club definitely going in the right direction. The stadium, the fans and the coaching staff are unbelievable and we've got quality players. I'm sure we can stay in this division and then build on it next season."

I remember when John Welsh first graduated from the academy, he's getting rave reviews...people are saying he will be as good as Stevie G one day.
But since then, his career started going hay-wire. Never quite reach the standard expected of him.
