Can a commercial website survive solely on revenues reaped from advertising.

hmmm...i think should be. but the starting stage is the most difficult. you need the money to finance the website. then it may takes a long time to have a steady flow of traffic. at that time, unless the website has other ways of earning money, i think it is difficult to endure. money out but no money in!
but later when you have managed to contact some companies or advertisers to advertise or sponsor the website, that is where the money comes in. and it can be huge amount. most websites which provide services to users for free survive or even make a profit from advertising campaigns.
but to get huge amount of traffic and advertisers....that is very difficult

I think it can't survive.
You would have to provide at least some service or product that's able to keep people to continue using the website.
Me, for one, wouldn't want to go to a website to see advertisements. -

well, since it is a commercial website, it must be selling something or providing something for the users. the something may be free to use inorder to attract more users. and since it is free, the owner will not earn anything right? so it needs advertisers and sponsors to survive. and if you manage to get many and big advertisers and sponsors, i can say you will earn big profits!
you can go and find out the average advertising cost on popular website. it is a few thousands! in this case, you have already gotten back the cost with one advertiser! -
Advertisers will look for exposure for their commercials.
So the basic 1st step is to create traffic.
Maybe you can come up with a nifty idea like friendster? ha.
I think I see extra ads on it already. -
yah...after some steady flow of traffic, it will be easy to get sponsors and advertisers. and the website will make big money. so i think it is possible to profit from advertising alone.
