I have always thought highly of the SAF...didnt quite consider the SPF...
I was wondering..wat opportunities are there in the SPF?
like the SAF has Commandos,guards and Armour and such...
how does the SPF choose their recruits to go the "elite" forces like STAR and the SPF?does everyone have to be a neighbourhood policeman first?
please mind my ignorance...i have no clue..was wondering someone could enlighten me..
and also...how does one perform in SPF "bmt"? -

must be damned fit and all the required stuffs to be in Guards or CDO...
u can even sign on if u are found suitable for that particular vocation...
how bout SPF?...all i see is sign on as a police officer...
dont they have choices for a person to join up STAR or SOC..that kinda thing...
its abit unclear to me i guess...

Anyway, kinda wondering why people like to keep associating all these elite groups with how "prestigious" the entire organisation is. These fellas are hardly representative of the whole force, and as far as I am concerned, there is nothing inferior about being a beat cop. Being a "normal" policeman can mean more treats to personal injury and life many times more than a lifetime of being in the "elite" forces, and that is not something to be ignored.
the SPF, in this regard, can therefore hardly be compared with the SAF. My experience of the SAF is it treats its "lower ranked members" with too much disdain, compared to how the same-ranked fella is treated in the SPF as a valued team member. Of coz I am just generalising, but having been a CPL in both, I suppose I can attest to that somehow... -

Just to share my opinions.
Most commandos are directly selected even before they have held a M-16 or more recently SAR 21 ( Not too sure if they have changed all M16 to SAR21 yet or not, old man liao lah... so not sure what SAF is going through now). Of course once selected doesn't mean that you will become one. But in my opinion, Commandos are not exactly specialised units. The real elite and specialised one is the SOF. A better comparision would be between STAR and SOF, although I don't see why should we compare as to which one is better, both are different and unique in their own rights. For these 2 units, you must be a regular , not NSF, haved served in the force for a min period, before you can qualify for selection.
Anyway on a more general tone, in the SAF you have some 350,000 "trained" soldiers ( including old reservists like me) that chiong here and there, but at the end of the day, you are still training. You do not really see real ops. We can't really afford that too.
For the SPF, every single day itself is operation, even off duty. When you see a snatch thief off-duty, you are very much required and obliged to tend to it. In SAF, other than live firing exercises, you fire blanks or maybe even universal rounds most of the times. In SPF, once you are on the roads, you have to carry live rounds and you better do. You won't know what's going to happen next.
In any case, I don't think it's quite possible to compare the two forces because of the different types of operations.
In my opinion, if you really wanna compare, although I don't see the point maybe you can compare the Military Police and SPF lah. Afterall their job scopes are much more similar. -

If you are to ask our brothers in this forum who are with the SPF, you'll realise that there are many vocations too within the SPF, just that SPF doesn't really go around " promoting". This may be due to the nature of the jobs itself; some are classified and not convenient to really reveal much.
Going to command schools in SAF is based on your 10 week's performance in BMT. Not too sure how clear an indication is that on your ability to lead. In fact by the end of your 6-7 weeks in BMT, your instrcutors already have in mind who they will nominate for "command schools". Again, I'm not too sure how much can you show within that period of time.
In SPF, you need 5-6 months of training to be equiped with the basic skills of policing. After that, you have to prove your worth on the job.
How fit does one has to be in order to be in commandos and guards? I have trained alongside them before ( no , I 'm not guards or commandos), you have fit ones and you have unfit ones. You have the ones that are damn "zai" and you have the half F*** ones. Don't think it's advisible to really label one as "zai" just because he is in a particular vocation.
You mentioned that "all i see is sign on as a police officer", one can also say that, "all I see is that "I sign on as a soldier in the army" ? Just like I've mentioned above, SPF is less "glamourous" becos it doesn't really go around promoting itself just like the SAF. You have "vocations" like patrolling, investigations and so on. Sometimes, it's even 2 or even 3 in one kinda thing. Maybe some of our brothers within the force can share something on this?
In my humble opinion, I feel that you should not have a pre conceived opinion that the SAF is superior or whatsoever if you really are keen to find out more about SPF or any other uniformed organisations.
I'm glad that you took a step in trying to find out more. Perhaps our brothers in this forum can help a bit? I will of course try my best to answer your questions. -

Well the only units that are direct entry I shall list out for you
1) NPCO => All the land divisions
2) SOC Trooper and K9
3) COR => Combine Ops Room
4) Airport Police
5) PCG
6) Traffic Police
7) PID
ISD
9) SECCOM
10) Police Band
For options 7-9 it is those case by case, sometimes there is open application type of thing...at most 1 or 2 person is selected...as for the rest like investigation or CID units, you need your experience first -
This idea that you have "alot of choices" when signing on in the army is slightly inaccurate, especially if you are going to be an officer. Yeah sure, they keep showing you nice stuff in your face, but do you really get to realise your choices 100%? Not really. The same thing in the SPF. You may indicate your choices, but where you go to is still dependent on manpower requirements. But I do get a general sence that those who indicate preferences for certain units while in training tend to be the first to be considered for posting there when an opening is available...although this can take many months or even years after having served in an originally-posted unit! -

hmmm.. they are not.. but they recurit PO to join them...but imagine you must go thru how many levels of screening...I wont consider going there at all sia... Wait i cannot buy 4D or TOTO.. i think i will shoot myself
