Another one.
STAR is protect as many lives as possible, even if they are criminals. Shoot to kill is only last resort.
Commandos are trained to kill during operations. -
The difference lies in their nature of operation...
SOF would most probably be mobilised when it's of a more political nature (EG. terrorist hijacks, attacks with political demands, wartime special reconaissance/sabotage etc...)
Whereas,
STAR would undertake more domestic based duties. (EG. high risk criminal arrest/escorts, criminal hijacks, armed robbery situations etc...)
AFAIK, both SOF and STAR are trained in airborne and diving, just that they may have different level of proficiency... no point comparing two of them, it is just like comparing apples and oranges or Navy SEALs With the Green Berets... -

The Pu Tekong incident where Indonesian robbers escape there from Malaysia, did the STS or STAR activated to search for them? -
STAR, STS and SOF are not the only specialists around... There are many others, whether tactical or not, uniformed or non-uniformed. Each unit specialises in a certain field... As such, the appropriate units would be deployed for certain situations...

for goodness sake, the hunt for the 3 robbers is not called "patrol". it's true tt Gurkhas don't do patrol, but they were sent to Tekong for the search operation on the 18th MARCH last year. They operated in their own small grps. Whats commendable is that 2 out of 3 of the robbers are caught by Gurkha troopers. In '91, the hijack attempt was countered by SOF right, not STAR.

How long do you have to sign on for if you try out as an NSman and you are selected as STAR?

i simply love their star assault vehicle. its sooo cool to see them in convoy on the road. my camp is at mandai...and always see them and the vehicles drove past my camp. its way cooooool...

Jurisdiction plays apart on why they are not considered special forces.
Star can storm anywhere in Singapore only. Troops cannot be deployed on international land .. like airport runways ... and railways tracks ... -
Whatever...STAR, SOF, NDU...the guys in there are all hot, if you ask me. I guess I'm one of those weird girls who are into military and/or special ops kind of guys.

I think what Pitot had said basically sums it up. Please do not compare SOF and STAR. Both are elite forces. Both commands respect. As for the question of not seeing them in action, i rather NOT see them in action all. Coz that will mean something really bad is happening. And please, STAR is not 3-legged cat. STAR is part of the Singapore Police Force. The personnel in STAR are Police Officers.
SOF are part of Singapore Armed Forces. They are military men.
STAR is essentially the SWAT team of Singapore. If there is war. The commandos will of cos fight the war. Not STAR. STAR is used to enforce the law in high risk situations. For example, Hijackings of bus, airliners. Hostage situations. So on and so forth. Star is heli-ops capable. And can also handle ops at sea. They are cross trained.
Ok, some may wonder why have STAR when we have SOF? THis is because. STAR members are police officers. The main difference between a STAR member and a SOF member is, a STAR member has arresting powers. SOF members do not.
STAR is formed to enforce the law. SOF is to protect our country.
