No... you have to be a police officer in order to join STAR....Originally posted by Arena:Can a non-police officer apply to the STAR selection?
Can I have the STAR webby?
Btw, how abt the PCG's Special Task Squandron (STS)?
Are the STS under STAR too? Or another entity?

2 of the armed robbers were nabbed by officers from the Gurkha Contingent. The remaining one was caught by an officer in the Police Coast Guard STS.Originally posted by Arena:So STS and STAR diff?
Which is tougher?
What is their role for each?
The Pu Tekong incident where Indonesian robbers escape there from Malaysia, did the STS or STAR activated to search for them?
I thought Gurkha never patrol without SOC troops in any public patrols. So, I don't think they alone did it.Originally posted by vIn.Warrior:2 of the armed robbers were nabbed by officers from the Gurkha Contingent. The remaining one was caught by an officer in the Police Coast Guard STS.
for goodness sake, the hunt for the 3 robbers is not called "patrol". it's true tt Gurkhas don't do patrol, but they were sent to Tekong for the search operation on the 18th MARCH last year. They operated in their own small grps. Whats commendable is that 2 out of 3 of the robbers are caught by Gurkha troopers. Pls read up in archives if you'd forgotten the facts.Originally posted by MobyDog:I thought Gurkha never patrol without SOC troops in any public patrols. So, I don't think they alone did it.

The application is open to all SPF personnels, but if u are NSF u'll need to sign on if u are being selectedOriginally posted by StRiKeMaN:Application For STAR Selection, Is It Open To All NSF Police or They Choose?
yes its by SOF cause the hijackers are making political demands. if its a petty thief trying to escape singapore by hijacking a plane...then STAR will come in.Originally posted by pwnz0r:In '91, the hijack attempt was countered by SOF right, not STAR.
True .. they are elite among law enforcement only.Originally posted by sadistmy:elites among the law enforcing community, yes.
among threats handling, no.
thats why we have the special forces,
and STAR is not considered as special force,
simply because of the magnitude of their training and capabilities.
Ask any STAR member,
they will admit.
I think what Pitot had said basically sums it up. Please do not compare SOF and STAR. Both are elite forces. Both commands respect. As for the question of not seeing them in action, i rather NOT see them in action all. Coz that will mean something really bad is happening. And please, STAR is not 3-legged cat. If it is so, then any tom, dick or harry can get into it.Originally posted by Pitot:Pls do not mix STAR and SOF up.
STAR is part of the Singapore Police Force. The personnel in STAR are Police Officers.
SOF are part of Singapore Armed Forces. They are military men.
STAR is essentially the SWAT team of Singapore. If there is war. The commandos will of cos fight the war. Not STAR. STAR is used to enforce the law in high risk situations. For example, Hijackings of bus, airliners. Hostage situations. So on and so forth. Star is heli-ops capable. And can also handle ops at sea. They are cross trained.
Ok, some may wonder why have STAR when we have SOF? THis is because. STAR members are police officers. The main difference between a STAR member and a SOF member is, a STAR member has arresting powers. SOF members do not.
STAR is formed to enforce the law. SOF is to protect our country.
