SINGAPORE : The Government is considering the tightening of security around Pulau Tekong after three armed robbers recently landed on the island.
The robbers, who fled from Johor Baru and landed on the island, triggered a massive 56-hour manhunt involving some 700 policemen and soldiers.
Among the measures being considered are erecting physical barriers like fences which have been used successfully along other parts of the northern coast, and additional coast guard patrols and surveillance sites around the island.
But speaking about incursions by sea in general, the Government said prevention was only part of the formula.
Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs, said: "However, it is not possible to ensure that no intruder will ever slip in.This is especially so with our close proximity to Malaysia which at some points are as close as 400 metres. Thus it is important we also have in place a response system to deal with such intrusions." - CNA
