Overview
As Singapore's largest terrestrial broadcaster, MediaCorp TV owns and manages the entertainment channels, Channel 5, Channel 8 and Channel U as well as the Malay entertainment and information channel, Suria and the channel of choice for the kids, Indian and arts communities, Central.

Singapore, 21 December 2004 - Following the merger of the mass market TV channels of MediaCorp and SPH MediaWorks and the decision to retain channel U, MediaCorp will rename the Chinese names of all MediaCorps TV channels to standardise the usage.
MediaCorp will re-name Channel 8 and Channel 5 from Di Ba Bo Dao and Di Wu Bo Dao to Ba Pin Dao and Wu Pin Dao respectively from January 1, 2005.
MediaCorp TV 12's Suria and Central will be referred to as Zhao Yang Pin Dao and Ju Dian Pin Dao respectively in Mandarin.
With the new names, these channels will now be aligned with Channel U or You Pin Dao, which will become part of the MediaCorp Group from January 1.
Mr Ernest Wong, Group CEO, MediaCorp, said, "This standardisation of the TV channels' names in Chinese is part of our corporate effort to adopt the best from both MediaCorp and SPH MediaWorks. Going forward, this will be the mindset and corporate culture of our merged TV and Studios operations."
Channel U's news will shift from 1830hrs and 2200hrs to new timeslots of 1900hrs and 2300hrs. The new change in timings for Channel U's news bulletins is to cater to the hectic lifestyles of young busy professionals who are usually home late.
Channel U's news will be anchored by Liang Ni and Serene Loo. Liang Ni, who presents the noon news on Channel 8, also fronted Channel 8's Olympics reports on news in August this year. She graduated from the well-known China University of Communications and worked previously as a presenter and reporter for China Central Television (CCTV), as well as producer and presenter at Shanghai radio stations.
Last year, she was awarded the most prestigious Golden Mike Award for "China's Most Influential Presenter", and won a silver award in 2001 at the nationwide "China Broadcasting Presenter" competition.
Serene joined MediaCorp News as a current affairs producer in 1999 and is currently anchoring the noon news on Channel 8, apart from being a well known face on the reporting scene. She has been nominated for the Asian TV Awards for her work and her productions have also won several MediaCorp News Journalism Awards.
In addition, Channel U's drama serials on weekdays will also be aired at new timeslots at 1930hrs and 2200hrs. The present 2100hrs timeslot for drama remain unchanged. Dramas on weekends will be at 1930hrs while variety programmes will be telecast at 2130hrs.
Mr Wong added, "With Channel U onboard, MediaCorp can now provide a wide variety of programmes to cater to TV viewers of different demographics, lifestyles and interests.
