I think LKY has to shoulder much of the blame for the arts not blooming in Singapore.
Is it a zero sum game? Many countries that are economic successes are worse than Singapore in creativity (like all Mideast nations, Brunei), while some are worse in both (like Bangladesh). Some like Iran have shown exceptional talent in cinema, while some rich nations like France have the best of both.
But the moot question is: when you have economic success that hinges on making industrial ants out of everyone, how can you expect people to even dare to dream of filmmaking?
Hopefully the next generation of Singaporeans, of which many will go overseas early either to study or to work, will think different.

haven't seen any taiwanese english show before, but taiwanese variety shows really sux.
they love to put on plenty of gimmicks and crap, and the female hosts always act cute and say "Wah, hao ke ai wo!!!!!" every 1 - 2 min.

because singaporeans are always trying to imitate westerners...and then they question whether singaporeans possess a common identity..
why even try to imitate when you are in your own country? do you neccessarily have to speak "proper english" (with accent) to make a show a good one?
come on...now give me some examples of shows which are actually "good".
