2 workers fall to their deaths at construction site in CBD
SINGAPORE: Two workers fell to their death on Friday in an industrial accident at a construction site in the Central Business District.
The mishap happened at the uncompleted 50-storey office building named One Raffles Quay.
At about 9am, the two men were on the 17th storey when a three-tonne steel platform they were working on gave way and came crashing down some 70 metres.
The two workers are 29-year-old site Singaporean supervisor Ang Chee Kong and 26-year-old Indian national Sundaramoorthy Vijayan.
Mr Ang's body was found on the 4th floor while Mr Vijayan's landed on the floor below.
Both men died of serious head injuries.
The entire construction site has about 600 workers; 60 were working near the area where the accident took place.
The 60 workers were not injured but all work has been stopped.
Main contractor Obayashi and inspectors from the Manpower Ministry are investigating the accident.
Obayashi's safety manager said: "It's a very sad incident and we will try to compensate the family. The cause of the accident, we are still investigating....we have stopped all the work and until we establish the cause, we will not start the work."
The Manpower Ministry is also looking into the compensation issue.
The incident follows a string of high-profile industrial accidents this year - the Nicoll Highway Collapse where four people died, the accident at Fusionpolis at Ayer Rajah which resulted in two deaths and a fire at Keppel Shipyard which claimed seven lives.
