SINGAPORE : Traffic Police have begun patrolling the streets in plain clothes and unmarked cars.
This has led to 166 offenders nabbed in Orchard Road alone in the first nine months of this year, compared to 33 in the same period last year.
Conventional patrol cars have devices to detect speeding, but the new unmarked cars rely on the officer's trained eye and a hand-held mini-camera to record offences.
Traffic Police said they went on special plain clothes operation only when they receive complaints from the public about errant drivers.
From August 14 to October1, they conducted 29 special operations and nabbed over 600 drivers.
Chua Chee Wai, spokesperson of Traffic Police, said: "Traffic Police uses unmarked traffic vehicle as one of the enforcement techniques to reign in serious moving offences like careless, reckless or dangerous driving." - CNA
