SINGAPORE : Fresh faces and a new look are in store for Channel U as MediaCorp looks towards the New Year with plans for its new Chinese station, which will come into its fold next month.
Meanwhile all MediaCorp channels will also get new Chinese names, though their English names remain unchanged.
For example, the Chinese names of Channel 8 and Channel 5 will be changed from 'Di Ba Bo Dao' and 'Di Wu Bo Dao' to 'Ba Pin Dao' and 'Wu Pin Dao' respectively from January 1.
Liang Ni and Serene Loo are the new faces for the new Channel U, but they aren't all that foreign to viewers.
Ms Loo currently reports news and anchors the noon bulletins on Channel 8.
Also a Channel 8 news presenter, Liang Ni came to Singapore in February after six years in the news industry in Shanghai, where she also won the prestigious Golden Mike Award for "China's Most Influential Presenter."
She said, "I see this as a new stage for me to reach out to viewers and bring them the latest news. I want to take them into the heart of the action."
News on Channel U will target the young and the professionals.
MediaCorp Group CEO Ernest Wong says the new Chinese names for the channels reflect the mindset and culture of the merged TV operations to adopt the best of both networks.
Viewers can also look forward to a wide variety of programmes, including new Channel U news bulletins at 7pm and 11pm, starting January. - CNA
