Singapore feels tremors from massive Indonesian earthquake
SINGAPORE: Tremors were felt in parts of Singapore early Sunday from a massive earthquake that struck Indonesia's Sumatra island, the local meteorological services division said in a statement.
The tremors were "mild" and caused no damage or casualties, an official told AFP.
Tremors were felt in Toa Payoh, Clementi, Beach Road, Siglap, Meyer Road and Tanjong Rhu.
Police said they received about 13 calls from these areas, but no accidents were reported.
The National Environment Agency confirmed the tremors were caused by an earthquake that occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra, about 950 kilometres from Singapore.
Indonesian officials measured the quake at 6.4 on the Richter scale, while the US Geological Survey said it registered 8.9. - AFP

Btw, Sri Lanka was hit by tsunami after an earthquake occured
1300 people were killed.....

I think a lot of natural disasters are hard to predict, what people can do is to forecast as much as they can and take precautions.Originally posted by chunyong:soon will be volcano cos its natural.... just hope dat it comes with ample warning for the villagers to evacuate on time.
well, earthquake triggers alot of disasters one. volcanoes always 100% confirmed....Originally posted by laurence82:I think a lot of natural disasters are hard to predict, what people can do is to forecast as much as they can and take precautions.
Anyway the tsunami hitting Sri Lanka was totally unexpected. Sign, its castarophic. 1300 people....

yah, its really weird, if Sri Lanka is hit by tidal waves due to monsson season, its believable, due to its location in the Indian Ocean, but earthquake and tsunami? And Malaysia too?Originally posted by wuming78:malaysia was hit by tsunamis too. i was rather surprised when i heard that. this must be one of the rare times that happened!
arent we glad singapore is well sheltered all around by our neighbours? what would a tsunami do to us?
it was an earthquake, not the monsoon.Originally posted by laurence82:yah, its really weird, if Sri Lanka is hit by tidal waves due to monsson season, its believable, due to its location in the Indian Ocean, but earthquake and tsunami? And Malaysia too?

for indonesia, it's impossible to warn cos it is so close to the epicentre.Originally posted by nightzip:hmm....why there isnt any ample warning before the hit???
Even for sri lanka, you think it's easy to disseminate it to the public? it's not that easy and not enough time.Originally posted by nightzip:hmm....why there isnt any ample warning before the hit???
the epicentre is under the sea... how u expect the scientist to test?Originally posted by nightzip:Nono, u get me wrong. I mean as the same before a volcano errupts, they have signs and researchers will monitor and know about when it will errupts, not as in WHEN it have errupted that warn the people to evacuate.
U get what i mean?? that is even before the tsunami, there should be warning signs like small quakes, or magma or fishes swimming in swarms away from regions, etc....
hmm...whatever are the scientists doing?
1 hour too little time, 1 day perhaps. For certain tourist beaches, the authorities could build strong seawalls to reduce the power of the tsunamis, saved lives, imagine how many people are there just in Patong beach, but the authorities need money of course. Japan has been one countries that built seawalls to protect certain cities from being destroyed by tsunamis, Japan could provide assistance on how to reduce tsunami effects.Originally posted by Poopie-Head:Even for sri lanka, you think it's easy to disseminate it to the public? it's not that easy and not enough time.
