SINGAPORE : Donations from Singaporeans to the worst-hit country Sri Lanka have been pouring in at the High Commission's premises.
Supplies for Sri Lanka's victims have overflowed to the extent that the ground floor of Goldhill Plaza has been converted into a storage and packing area, with hardly any space to walk.
Besides ordinary Singaporeans, hotels too got into the act donating old linen, blankets and towels for the Sri Lankan victims.
Mr Ranjith Gunaratna, Sri Lankan High Commission, said: "We would like to request not to send us used clothes. If they can send us some food and medicines, and food items for children as well as tinned food, it will be most useful.
"We have already sent some medicines from Singapore hospitals, $50,000 worth of medicines, we have already despatched them to Sri Lanka."
The High Commission said it was touched by the outpouring of help rendered by Singaporeans.
Ms Catherine La Jeunesse, a volunteer, said: "There are so many things that have been donated and they have no one to pack them and sort them. So all these people have just shown up to pack these things to send to Sri Lanka."
More than 10,000 kilogrammes of emergency supplies - like mineral water, rice and instant noodles - were carefully packed before being flown to Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines.
Meanwhile, SembCorp Environmental Management says it is also making arrangements to collect donations from Singaporeans.
Residents served by the company need only pack the items in boxes and leave them outside their homes, and SembCorp's network of 100 men will collect them. - CNA
