SINGAPORE : Buildings that adopt environment-friendly features and green architecture will soon get the Green Mark award.
This is a new award introduced by the Building and Construction Authority with the support of the National Environment Agency.
Under the Green Mark scheme, buildings will be accessed based on their impact to the environment.
They will be graded for various criteria such as energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, environmental protection and even innovative green technologies adopted.
The idea is to encourage developers and designers to look at buildings as part of the entire landscape and to enhance the greenery in the buildings and surroundings.
The scheme was launched by Minister of State for Defence and National Development Cedric Foo on Tuesday.
He says green buildings will enjoy lower running costs from the reduced energy, water and materials consumption.
They will also offer a more pleasant working environment, which is beneficial to employees' productivity and health.
Although a voluntary scheme, Mr Foo notes there is already strong interest from leading private and public sector organisations for their projects to be assessed under the Green Mark programme. - CNA
