SINGAPORE : The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority has tightened security checks at all of Singapore's checkpoints, resulting in more than 17,000 cases of contraband and illegal goods being imported into Singapore being detected in the first eleven months of last year.
On the morning of 12th January, two cigarette smugglers were nabbed in the act at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
Both were Malaysian men driving Malaysian registered cars.
The first suspect hid 52 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in the car's door panels, while the second suspect hid 151 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes inside the engine, the door panels, and the boot of his car.
The total amount of custom duties and Goods & Services Tax involved for both cases are estimated to be S$800 and S$12,000 respectively.
If found guilty, the suspects could be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of custom duties and Goods & Services Tax involved. - CNA
