SINGAPORE : Those planning to travel overseas and bring back food items during this festive season have been reminded that under Singapore law, they have to obtain a permit before importing food into the country.
The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) says only small amounts of food meant for personal consumption do not require a permit.
But meat and eggs from some countries are not part of this exemption.
Examples are beef from the US, poultry and eggs from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, and all forms of meat from Malaysia and Thailand.
If in doubt as to what is permitted, AVA advises travellers to declare their food items to the customs officers.
If any disallowed products are not declared, travellers may be fined up to S$50,000 or jailed two years or both. - CNA
